Try some crunches... they are not quite a full sit-up but they work some on strengthening your abs a little which in turn help the back. You can also do back extensions... lay on your tummy, hands at your side and lift your chest up off the ground using your stomach and back muscles.

For strengthening lower back nothing like Yogic
asanas(posture). While there are many asanas to strengthen the back the most common asana I choose while teaching my student is - Poorna Shalabasanas (full locust posture) followed by Naukasana (boat posture). You have to repeat
each posture 3 times and in about 90 days time you will be
amazed at lower back strengthening effect of these two
postures. Ofcourse learning from a trained teacher would be
more advantageous. Best of luck.

When you are watching TV slide forward in the chair so that you are laying straight but at an angle. Now tighten up your whole body and hold it for as long as you can paying particular attention to your abdomen, thighs and buttocks. Release. Repeat.
That will strengthen your core muscles, the muscles that hold you straight and support your back.

Try walking. You get outdoors, meet the neighbors, make new friends. You are tightening up because of the way you are holding yourself on the treadmill. Have a professional physical therapist watch the way you do it, maybe they can catch what's going wrong.
