Codeine is not an over the counter medication. It's a controlled substance that requires a prescription. As for Coricidin, this cough and cold medication is over the counter, however it's more like "behind the counter" - most pharmacies/drug stores, etc keep these medications and others like it (that some people take for a recreational high) locked up behind the counter to avoid theft or people buying in quanitity. So can kids buy them? Unlikely.

Actually, when codeine is 10mg or less, and is combined with guaifenesin or another non narcotic substance, it is a schedule V drug. In most states, schedule v drugs are available with prescription or under the discretion of the pharmacist. You can obtain stuff like Robutussin AC with codiene from the pharmacist without prescription. You will have to fill out paperwork though. Try any mom and pop pharmacys, not walgreens or cvs.
