I'm sure that this question has been asked several times before, but I didn't see it so I'm asking...Who do you think would win in a scheduled 15 round Heavyweight title match between the Joe Louis of 1937-38 and the Cassius Clay of 1963-64?

One of the very best in the history of boxing greats against the very best. Ali would have decisioned Joe, if they met at their peaks I can't see Louis not going the distance. Joe was a class act in and out of the ring but he was basically a straight ahead puncher who relied on pressure and power. Ali simply would have been the most difficult target Joe ever threw a punch at, and would have been peppered with jabs and combinations while trying to cut the ring off on Ali.

Ali by unanimous decision.

Cassius Clay would win. Joe Louis is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. He was a technically sound fighter with great skills and tremendous power. But he didn't have good competition during his time. He fought what is known as "the bums of the month", and by the time he faced greats like Marciano he was already in decline and lost badly. Most of all, he hadn't come across a fighter like Ali/Clay. The 63-64 Ali was very very fast that no heavyweight, including Louis, would be able to touch him. Remember, that Louis had a hard time with the perpetually moving Billy Conn, and Ali was a lot faster than Conn. But the thing about Ali was he didn't just dance and clown around the ring. He threw that quick left jab while moving and would punctuate it with blindingly fast combinations. While he didn't have Joe's knockout power, the sheer volume of punches he throws, which almost always hit their target, would surely stagger the great Joe Louis and eventually finish him off. And don't forget that Ali at 6'3", 210 was bigger than Louis and any fighter that big could certainly hit.

I think Cassius Clay would win this fight probably easier than one would think. Clay had great speed both with his hands and with his feet. Louis may have been a better puncher, but his style was more plodding and I don't think he could have caught Clay. Let us not forget how good a chin Clay had, while Louis' was not as sturdy.

Foster it has been asked but it can't be asked enough. I can't be the one to answer this because to me they are even. I could see Muhammad Ali beating Joe Louis by decision. I can also see Louis coming back 3 months later after their fight and beating Muhammad Ali by decision. Two of the best fighters in the history of boxing.
