I just got a new 6 month old cocker puppy friday and she went into heat that day, just my luck right? Anyway, I know I have to wait until she is finished with her heat cycle. How long should I wait though?

I'd wait until she is out of heat. 4 weeks. For now keep her away from male dogs and do not leave her unattended at any time. You don't want her bred. You can spay now, but she is very vascular and inflamed. It's a little more complicated.

You've got a long wait, 5-6 months! Call your vet and check what they recommend.

I'm alarmed by the amount of people who say you can spay a b itch in heat just that it will be more expensive. I don't believe any responsible vet would do this - it's dangerous. The uterus is engorged with blood during the heat cycle, and spaying during this time runs a serious risk of excessive bleeding. Don't let a vet spay your dog while she's in heat!

It's not the same as cats who can be spayed while they're in heat, this is not dangerous at all, as the mechanisms of the two species' reproductive cycles are different. People often get the two confused.

You'll need to wait about a month. She'll have a discharge for 7-10 days & will swell. After the discharge stops, she'll really swell & be ready to mate. You'll have to really be careful not to leave her put of your sight until the swelling is gone, could be a couple more weeks. When she is back to normal then get her in. She can go into heat again in 6 months, my poodle did. When I couldn't be with her, I kept her in a separate room with doggy bloomers on her just to be absolutely sure my male didn't get to her (he had a male dog wrap on too). It worked for 3 cycles before I had her spayed. Hope this helps.

You can get her spayed while she's in heat, but it's more complicated and more expensive. Once the heat cycle is over (generally around 2-3 weeks) you can get her spayed. Talk to your vet about it though and see what they recommend.

Talk to your vet! Just for information for anyone else out there, too late for you, my vet said the best time to get a dog spayed is before the first heat. The vet said it is a 100% prevention from the dog getting breast cancer which is the number 1 problem for female dogs.

You don't have to wait, but it is generally more cost effective.some vets say they will spay and neuter pets when they weigh one pound-scary right? 6 months is generally the safest place to start.if you are still worried, ask your vet if the run pre-surgical blood work and what kind of surgical monitoring equipment the use the ensure the safety of your pet!!You will be surprised that most vets do not use a lot of monitoring equipment and still charge you a lot of money for the spay, so compare them and find the one that best suits you and your pet! I'm sure she is quite adorable...

You could get it done now, but they charge a lot more when the dog is in heat, or pregnant.

As soon she's done with her heat, get her spayed.

Also, never leave her unattended. Always walk her supervised and on leash.

Make sure she is kept crated in a different room with the door closed if you have a male dog in your home. Dogs have been known to mate through fences and crates, so these will not keep her "safe."

I believe about the week after she is done with heat you can spay her. However, I would call the vet you are planning on to take her to and see what they recommend and while your at it you can make an appointment. :)
