My son broke his nose playing baseball this afternoon, and he's in a lot of pain! I have given him tylenol and an ice pack but he's miserable and having trouble sleeping. Anybody know of a way to help him?

Yes, we have been to the hospital. They dont do anything for a broken nose, just set it and leave it alone.

He's seven, and I worry about giving him too much meds as he has a kidney problem. Thanks so much for all the ideas.

I've had one, Mine came from softball. there really is nothing you can do it is just really uncomfortable. You are doing what you can. I would suggest just make him as comfortable as possible and let him sleep on an incline. I know when I was flat on my back, it seemed harder to breathe and it felt like my nose was going to explode.

Give him things to keep his mind off the pain. Don't point it out or ask about it a lot. It made me think about it and then it seemed to hurt worse. I don't know how old he is but my daughter is 12 years old and when she broke her arm, the doctor told me to give her 250 mg of IB Proffen. You should check with the doctor or pharmacist for the right dosage for your child.

Let him sleep as much as possible, Try to keep his hands away from his nose while he is sleeping. I hit myself all the time. It hurts a lot. I literally ended up sleeping with my hands inside of pillow cases so It wouldn't hurt as bad.

Give him straws to drink from and keep foods easy to eat and swallow, he can't breathe very well through his nose so he needs to get the food down quick.

Good luck and really keep his hands away from his face. He will want to touch it, it is normal but he will regret it.

Depending on how old he is, try Motrin instead of Tylenol. I have foun Motrin and Advil to be more helpful with pain relief than Tylenol. The Tylenol is better for fever in my opinion. Other than that, I would just keep up with the ice. Maybe call his doctor in the morning and see if they advise packing his nose or anything like that.

Hope that helps and he gets to feeling better soon.

confirm he can breathe by his nostril if no longer he desires xrays asap!place some ice wrapped in a textile over the nostril for sort of quarter-hour at a time and then get rid of the ice. This technique could be repeated dissimilar cases in the process the day. Use ice on the time of injury and for a million-2 days in a while to decrease discomfort and swelling. confirm to take breaks between purposes, and don't prepare the ice directly to the exterior. Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to decrease discomfort. purely use those drugs as directed. Take an over the counter nasal decongestant to help in respiration in the process the nostrils. confirm to study warning labels linked with those drugs. those drugs should not be used for greater effective than 3 days. raise the top, incredibly whilst snoozing, to sidestep bigger swelling of the nostril. Prop the top up with pillows or raise the top of the mattress by putting super blocks or telephone books under the mattress.

Give him a lot of ice to put on his nose... Maybe some warm milk might calm him a little or some hot tea.. If the ice does not help try a warm or hot compress on his nose.

Ok, first of all, Hot angie is a flat out *****!! What the hell is her problem? *****!! Anyway, give him motrin. It helps with throbbing pain. Motrin and benedryl with an ice pack should help him. Poor little guy! I hate when kids are hurt! This is what helped my daughter when she broke her arm and wrist when she was only a year old. Hope this helps and hot angie can go to hell!

you can rotate between tylenol and motrin every 4 hrs., that way you can reduce the swelling and manage pain on a more frequent basis. if you are not already, wrap the ice pack in a cool wet cloth, to soften it a bit. trouble sleeping....... sleepy time tea works great for my kids. i cant remember who makes it, but it is in most grocery stores and it is called "sleepy time". good luck. :)

I don't condone giving kids medicine to help them sleep, but if it were my son...I would give him the Tylenol, ice pack and maybe benedryl...Of course, I am not a doctor...that is just what I would do to help him sleep. Poor Guy!

an ER does more than just tell the patient to go home. they can prescribe pain meds and teach the parent to monitor the child's airway and follow up with the pediatrician in the morning. call the ER or pediatrician NOW for pain meds.
