I bought her from a pet shop and they have already given her three worm pills but I continue to see worms in her stool and on her tail. Should I take her to the vet. I have a daughter are they ok to be around each other. Is the dog contagious to us in anyway?

ABSOLUTELY take your puppy to the veterinarian. Reputable pet stores (are there any???) should provide a guarantee if the pet is determined ill after being taken to the vet after purchase. Your first mistake was buying a puppy from the pet store. Pet stores obtain their dogs from puppy mills which are breeding businesses that place profit before health. Regardless of where you got your dog, you should be visiting a veterinarian for regular check-ups at least once a year.

Has your new puppy been given a flea treatment? You can give the dog as many worming pills as you would like but with out having it rid of fleas on a regular bases, the worms will come right back.
If you have been giving flea preventative such as frontline, then perhaps your puppy has a worm that the medication doesn't cover. There are more worm varieties than most people think and yes, some humans can catch also but it really is rare. Make sure you wash your hands after handling the puppy and teach your kids to do the same, not just because of the worms but for over all good healthy habits.
Make sure you take the puppy to the vet as soon as possible also. Collect some of what you have been seeing plus a fecal sample (as fresh as you can before your appointment) and bring the list of what the pet store has been giving the puppy. It is very easy to "over-worm" a puppy and make them very very sick, so make sure they have this.
Since this has been an on going issue with the dog, the pet store should foot the bill for you also, if they give you a hard time, complain to the manager, managers manager, or who ever untill they make it right. Unfortunately there are so many animals living in such confined spaces at theses places, worms, fleas and much more is very common.
Good luck and have fun giving your new puppy lots of love!

PS, if by some rare chance you or your daughter get worms, you will just have to take a dewormer for people. Its pretty much the same thing just a different medication. Just make sure the puppy does not lick your face, that old saying "a dogs mouth is cleaner than a humans", is very false.

This is an example to everyone of why petshop worm and flea treatment should not be used. It's useless, and sometimes dangerous.

Yes, go to the vet - they can sort you out in a jiffy. You probably won't even have to take the puppy (although you do need to know how much she weighs for the dosage) - just go and get some over the counter treatment from the vet, like Drontal or Panacur. The vet can go through the dosage with you and puppy will be sorted. Though of course you would be taking a puppy to the vet for a new puppy check and it's vaccinations anyway ;-)

As far as you and your daughter is concerned - just keep puppy's poo cleaned up and wash your hands after. Don't let doggy lick your faces, don't kiss her, and wash hands after handling her. Depending on what type of worms they are, eggs can be in the puppies coat or mouth, so you don't want them in your mouth! Take these precautions and you should be pretty safe.

well.. it sounds like they didn't really worm the puppy or they gave the wrong kind of wormer for the type of worm the puppy has... butwhy in the H*** would a pet shop not treat this dog in the proper manner

To answer your question... YES TAKE THIS PUPPY TO THE VET... there are many other things that they may not have tended to properly

Next... what do the worms look like? Tapeworms for example will look like grains of rice in the stool. Round worms are long & kind of turn into a corkscrew when exposed to air.

I would quarantine the puppy until you get it to the vet... if your daughter pets the puppy & then covers her mouth to cough.. then it is possible that there could be a problem depending on what type of worm you are dealing with.

Can this pet store give you any other previous treatment history? Puppies & thier mommas should be wormed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks & 8 weeks as all puppies are born with roundworm.

Yes. Take her to the vet. Some types of worms are contagious. Wash hands and clothing after handling the dog and it shouldn't be a problem.

You most definitely need to take your dog to the vet...like tomorrow. Depending on the type of worm they could be contagious also.

you need to stop giving that puppy worm pills because they are poisonous, I assume they were bought over the counter, one reason they aren't working. Your daughter won't catch them, but learn this lesson, your puppy could die because that stuff is bad stuff and a vet can just give your pup a shot and worms are gone including eggs. take it to the vet and tall him all you have given him so far. You are lucky the poor thing is still alive.

What kind of worms? are they tiny white rice-like pieces in her poop and bum? if so they are tapeworms... over the counter wormers dont usually get rid of them. Also if it is like I describe and is tapeworms they are not transmittible to humans unless you eat a flea... which I doubt you will. Roundworms can be passed to humans by contact with contaminated soil, or feces. Roundworms are long(6in), thin round worms that you dont often see in the dogs poop As long as you and your daughter wash your hands it shouldnt be a problem, shes more likely to get worms playing in the dirt or a sandbox than with the dog. I do suggest you take the pup to the vet to get the appropriate wormer to get rid of the problem, its not very expensive and then you will know for sure the worms are gone... make sure to tell the vet she has already been given meds before and explain the situation.
