Knowing your pup is housetrained, but being young you also know he/she does not have enough control to hold it in while you are at work for 4-8 hrs, would you rather...

A) Just leave the dog out and clean up any mess when you get home using paper towel, disinfectant, garbage bags, mops etc

or B) Leave a puppy pad by the door so that if the pup does absolutely have to go and cannot hold it anymore, it will go on a puppy pad that will keep the urine/feces off the floor and when you get home you can just fold it up and throw it away.

I know some people have crates to put their pups in but still answer this as if you didnt have a crate if you will.

This is in response to a question on here saying puppy pads are for morons, while I agree they arent something to be used when you are home to let the dog out as that would just be plain lazy, but I see they are of benefit when you arent home so that your floor doesnt get ruined or dirty.

Cara, its not a question of time. Everyone has to work for a living, and leave the house once in a while. I dont know where you live but here I cant take my dogs to the grocery store, bank, restaurants or anywhere else for that matter, if I could I would. SInce its impossible, I have to leave them alone sometimes so do other people. When you do leave them alone what would you rather do? scrub your floor or simply throw out a pee pad?

I would go with Item # 2.. there are so many reasons.. but the top of the list is that you want to encourage good behavior & re-enforce potty training lessons.

Otherwise, why bother potty training in the first place.... if you don't offer the puppy pads (in your scenario) then you are training the puppy to go anywhere in the house

Also... I DON'T BELIEVE IN CRATES.. except under certain EXTREME circumstances.... WHY? because with a crate the dog isn't trained on how to behave in the whole house & also doesn't get the proper amount of excersize.. also, most owners mis-use crates & it becomes passive abuse and neglect of the dog

You know before Crate Training & Puppy Pads... folks used newspaper on the kitchen or bathroom floor to train & re-enforce training.... if it worked so well for so long, then why not utilize this?

Many puppies and dogs won't use puppy pads, and will either shred them (creating a whole new kind of mess) or use the bathroom anywhere but on the pad.

I know of dogs who actually will move the pad and potty where the pad was, but not on the pad itself.

Personally, I would confine the pup to one easy to clean room with a baby gate if I did not have a crate.

Well, some dogs can hold and some can't. The mutt we had when I was a kid could be left in the house all day with no problem. He would be bouncing at the back door when we got home. My solution was to cut a hole in the back door and install a doggie door. They can come and go as needed.

It's a moronic question. hire a puppy sitter that can let your puppy go outside. puppy pads cost as much as critter sitters.

C) You don't get a puppy if you don't have the time to let it out.
