They have it. The 'Old Testament' has many things in it to tell them EXACTLY what God has done.
It's just that they don't understand it . . . which God promised THAT too! lol

People in the Old Testament had to kill a spotless lamb every year so that their sins would be rolled over until the next year. This was only a shadow of things to come. Jesus, the spotless lamb of God, was slain in the New Testament for the forgiveness of our sins. He was also slain on the same day the Old Testament lambs were suppose to be slain, on the Passover. This is the new plan of salvation, hence the phrase the New Testament.

ok this is how it goes...
"were the people of the old testament taught that someone in the future would be cucified..."
yes and no, there are a whole bunch of prophetic scriptures alluding to a coming Messiah, and the way he should die. But scriptures were not clear to them, unless God chose to open their eyes to what it meant.
(Likewise Christians today cannot truly understand scripture unless God opens our eyes to what it means. and he wants to do that for us, we just have to ask.)
"Or did they have to believe something else to go to heaven..."
Before Christ things were different. They had to be obedient to the law, namely the ten commandments, and if they sinned they had to offer up sacrifices in order to receive forgiveness. That is how they got to heaven... through obedience.
Not perfect obedience, because no man except Christ can be perfect... but God is a Judger of the heart. They had to try with a pure heart to obey and sacrifice offerings if they sinned.
Well when Christ died, he was THE PERFECT SACRIFICE... we don't need to sacrifice anymore. BC Jesus took our sins upon himself so all we have to do is accept Jesus by faith (meaning believe in him.) Ask Jesus to forgive us if we sin. So now we are saved through faith (in Christ) rather than obedience.
But still obedience to the bible would be a by-product of truly loving God, right! So again God is still a judger of hearts and He knows if our hearts really mean what we say and do! We can't be fake before the LORD ALMIGHTY!!!
But see before, only high priests could come into his presence, but now through Jesus we all can come to him!!!!
Also, for the Jewish guy (i think he's a Jew) who wondered why Christians would read the something for the Jews...
Read the old testament for yourself especially the book of Isaiah and you will see that Jesus Christ of Nazareth meets ALL criteria for the coming Messiah. He has already come, it it is for the Jew and gentile alike!!!!!!

Yes there are prophecies in the Old Testament about crucifixtion on a cross, which was not even a punishment until the Romans came to power.
However, the people of the Old Testament, before Jesus of course, if they believed in the one true God, that is how they were saved. As the bible says about Abraham, it was "accounted to him as righteousness" that he worshipped, and obeyed, the one true God.

Moses gave an example, what you might call a "type" or symbol of Christ' sacrifice on the cross when he used the bronze serpent on a cross to heal people of snake bite in the Desert. Isaiah 53 also describes the suffering and crucificxion of Christ.

The people of the old testament are Hebrews who were waiting for their messiah but to this day the messiah hasn't arrived. Christians like to believe the messiah they're talking about is Jesus but Jews don't believe Jesus was the son of god so now I bet you're wondering why christians would take Hebrew scriptures and use them as their own?

Crucifixion was a relatively new concept at the time of Christ. But it is clear they knew the Messiah would suffer (Isaiah 53) and they also knew the Messiah was God (Isaiah 9:6)

Before Jesus came to earth, they all just died. Yes some of the old prophets, God gave them visions and insights that there would be one coming that would save them and us and the whole nine yards. May God Bless U.

They believed in a coming Messiah. They did not know that
Crucifixion was going to be the means of His death. Jesus
revealed that to His apostles before He died.
It's always been a Jesus Christ, they knew there would be
a Messiah didn't know His name and that gained them entrance into heaven.
