For the past 5 years on my taxes, I have checked my status as "single", when I actually qualify for "head of household". This equates to more money!
Can I go back and ammend my previous returns to file as "head of household" and get the extra money I could have gotten?

If you are sure that you qualify for head of household, then you can amend the 2004 and 2005 returns. You can get 2003 yet if you file the amendment by 4/17 . It's too late to get the refunds for years before 2003, so no point in filing amendments for earlier years.

Yes, but only for the past 3 tax years. The deadline for amending your 2003 return is Tuesday so you'd better get moving on that one NOW!

same question but divorced. can someone claim head of household if kids are in house every other weekend and summers? I will do it this year because same is true yet one child stayed and is still here after coming for summer. Ex wife is saying I can also claim child credit after she signs a 8332 tax form releasing child. Need to know if this is true. Please advise. 02/01/2016

Yes you can! go to IRS.gov, and look up form 1040X for the years in question. You will have to "re-do" your taxes for those years. It takes time, but is doable. I have done it for my clients in the past.
