The 15th (today) is a Sunday. Whenever April 15th is on a weekend they move it to the following Monday, in this case the April 16th. However in December or January, they moved the date again, due to April 16th being a holiday in Washington DC, Emancipation Day.

The 15th is a Sunday which would normally extend the deadline to the next business day. However, the 16th is Emancipation Day in Washington DC and all Federal offices there will be closed. The IRS decided that the deadline for all taxpayers should be extended one more day to the 17th.

State tax deadlines are generally the16th this year, unless you live in MA. The 16th is a State holiday in MA (Patriots Day) so MA State returns are also due on the 17th.

And if you live in the area covered by the Andover Service Center you get an another extra day to file an extension I believe, because of the MA holiday, so that makes it the 18th.

Here in NC the state has followed federal and filing day is tomorrow, but Bostonianinmo makes a good point about state returns
