Abraham is basicly given the credit for founding monotheism, the belief in a one and only non-physical god. He was the first prophet after the great flood and is important because he made the original pact with god in his bloodline, and all the great prophets of the bible as well as Mohamed were descendants of Abraham

Abraham was formerly known as Abram. Born in Ur of the Chaldees. (decendant of Shem son of Noah) He was married to Sarah (Sarai) a beautiful woman. God made a covenant with Abraham that he would be the father of many nations however he was childless for over 100 years. During that time, he grew impatient with God and took matters into his own hands. At the urging of Sarah, he took her maid Hagar and she bore him a son Ishmael. He was not the child that God had promised however and this created the nation of arabic peoples. Finally, God gave Abraham and Sarah the son they were waiting for, Isaac was the promised child. He became the father of the Jewish or Israelite people. God's promise that he would be the father of nations was fulfilled. Today, they are as numerous as the sand on the seashore. There is much more to the story but you can find it in Genesis 12-25. Hope this helps.

Abraham(means the father is high) A son of Terah and descendant of Shem whom God called out of Ur of the Chaldees to be the founder of the Hebrew nation (Gen. 12:1-6). He migrated first to Haran in Mesopotamia with his nephew Lot and his Father, Terah, and on the death of the latter entered Palestine. After short stays in Shechem, Bethel, and the Negeb he visited Egypt during a time of famine, and then returned to Hebron. In hope of God's promise of a son, he took as his wife Hagar, and Egyptian maid, who bore him Ishmael (Gen 16). Later his wife Sarah bore Isaac, who became the heir of promise (Gen. 17:1). He died at the age of 175, and was buried in the cave of Machpelah in Hebron (Gen. 25:7-10).

Abraham is credited as being the man who discovered God. He preached monotheism at a time when people believed in a god for each town and for each purpose.
