1. No such thing as a free or cheap dog 2. Pets are not gifts and btw I doubt your husband would appreciate some free/cheap pup that turns out to be sickly and costly at the vet 3. You're an adult. If a shelter/rescue fee is NOT in your budget right now then a reputable breeder certainly is and that means odds are you CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE A DOG RIGHT NOW 4. let your husband pick his own dog ETA: Husky i was neither belittling her or undermining her intelligence. I DO however question whether she's actually put any thought into this. I don't know about you but "CHEAP" gifts are never appreciated. this woman doesn't even have a specific breed in mind just something free or cheap that she can surprise her hubby with. Well meaning or not dogs are not gifts. Pets are a lifetime commitment. What happens if her husband doesn't really want a dog right now or even better picks a breed than is not the right breed for them? Free or cheap dogs end up in the shelter or being dumped on someone else.

Puppies are never "free" or "cheap."
If you do get a puppy for free, you will have to pay for the vet office visit, fecal exam (for worms), heart worm test, and any other health tests required in your area. During this time you will also have to pay for any necessary vaccines, so the first visit can and does often run over $200 here in NC...I'm sure it's higher in NY.
Then you have the cost of spay/neuter, unless you can afford to raise the puppies that may come along well into adulthood. Not all puppies find loving homes nowadays!
Also is the cost of supplies:
A good safe dog food,
A crate or bed,
Dog bowls for food and water,
Appropriate collar and leash,
Quality shampoo,
Grooming (when needed by a professional),
Nail clippers,
Enzyme cleaner (for potty accidents),
Replacement of your belongings (for those that get chewed)
Toys,
Chews,
Treats
Then you have to factor in where you will keep your dog if you are sick or on vacation. Boarding adds up.
What about emergency vet bills? What if you get a parvo puppy? Or it develops hip displasia? What about ghiarrdia? Treatment for worms?
What if it has food allergies? Are you willing to purchase a formula like Fish and Chips or Lamb Millet and Rice (check out http://www.frrco.com/121668 ) since most dogs with food allergies are allergic to chicken or wheat? (The mentioned two formulas contain no wheat, chicken or corn.)
What if the pup winds up with demodex mange, a condition passed from mom to pup, that may recur through out the dog's life?
What if the pup swallows something and gets a blockage, or poisoned?
All of this and more needs to be considered. Puppies, and even adult dogs, are not cheap. Purchasing or adopting a dog is the cheapest part of dog ownership. If you can't pay the price, then don't bring a dog into your home.

I have to agree with previous posters. A pup is never free or cheap. You are planing to bring in another member of your family. You have to consider the cost of the vet to take care of the new member. You have to consider the cost of shots and medication. There is the cost of going to the vet every year for booster shots and the monthy cost of things such as Heart Guard and Frontline or other flea and tick control. If your puppy gets sick there are additional expenses. No matter what you spend for your pup he is going to love you and you should be ready to give him the same love.

WHY on earth would you want a cheap or free puppy? There are no guarantees that you will have a healthy pup! If you are looking for cheap, go to your local shelter!

Check the shelters.. They have decent dogs looking for homes.. Course they are looking for people who have some money to be able to take them to the vet when they need it, people that can afford to buy good dogfood and everything else.. If you are that cheap.. rethink getting a dog.. A free or cheap dog is still going to cost you money to care for it.

Go to the SPCA and get a puppy that has been properly checked out. Otherwise you will end up with a diseased runt that will cost you a royal fortune in vet fees.

Your local dog pound probably has many puppies to choose from. All you do is pay a small fee for their shots and stuff. Plus you would be saving their life because the pounds usually only keep a dog for 3 to 6 days before they put them to sleep.
Please check your local pound and save a life!!

Humane Society, local rescues, local ads. Please don't buy from a pet store. There are so many puppies that need to be rescued by people that want just a happy, healthy pup whether or not it is a mut or pure bred. Good Luck in your endeavor!

Puppy's are never free or cheap! You can get one free or cheap though, try your local newspaper, the SPCA, the local pound, or a friend, relative, or family member.
