Sorry, male viewpoint here.
Indoor stains are more predictable. Mostly food and drink.
Outdoor stains can involve plant stains, animal stains, charcoal, dirt, possibly even grease and oil. Also, since people tend to stand outdoors, there is more chance of people bumping into each other.

The worst is definitely an outdoor wedding in the grass. The bugs eat you alive plus allergies are causing people to sneeze throughout the wedding. I went with a boyfriend to his cousin's wedding. The wedding was cheap so she had her reception in the backyard. Wish I had been told that. He invite said "The Manor House"--silly me I thought that wouldn't be a backyard. My heels sank so deep into the muddy yard and they had to be thrown out. My dress wasn't long so it was fine though. Anyone who sat down on the wooden benches had marks all over the back of their dress.
I also had a friend get married in an outdoor garden and her bridesmaids dresses had a small train on them. I don't know what she was thinking but when they were standing at the front, the dew just kept creeping up the dress and it was quite wet by the end of it and covered in grass stains. This time I was wearing sandals and a beach type dress so I was fine.
I don't understand why brides want to ruin the bridesmaids dresses when so often they pick them hoping she will be able to wear it again. If you ruin it at the wedding, it won't be.
Anytime the guests have to be on grass, it's going to cause a lot of damage to the outfits. And anytime the wedding requires a hike from the parking to the outdoor location, it is polite to inform guests before hand that it is a mile walk so they can make sure they are wearing comfortable shoes.
For brides that want an outdoor wedding, why not pick someplace that has paving stones or a deck. I had a friend get married on a boat. One girl on this site is getting married by a pool--perfect as I'm sure it already has a concrete patio. You can still get the view of the outdoors but everyone doesn't have to be sinking into the ground.
I've never ruined a dress indoors. Unless you spill red wine on yourself, I don't really see how its possible. Or you provided markers at the "kids table" and the kids attacked several guests. You expect a lil dust on the ground and if its a floor length dress it might get ripped if someone steps on it. But I've never known that to happen.
Usually I'd say the outfit is ruined. The day is definitely ruined as now you have to rush back to a hotel and purchase whatever cleaning product you use at home (I like OxyClean) while trying to wash it out in a hotel sink.

Indoor, because space is usually more limited. People are getting up, walking in tight quarters, etc. Wine and or food gets spilled when someone bumps into you. Outdoor would have more room. I was able to get my dress dry cleaned.
Some people may expect you to pay the dry cleaning bill.

Indoor weddings are definitely harder to clean up after. I think about getting your clothes messed up is 50-50. So, if you're giving the wedding, have it outdoors. If you're just attending one, be very careful!

Outdoors, one has less control over the environment. There are simply more variables which could stain-everything from rain to bird poo, is out of your control. Indoors you have more control and usually more resources w/ which to address the stain if it happens.

Indoor...mostly from the reception and rowdy guest spilling drinks. I took my dress to the dry cleaner and they made it better.
