Firstly I’d like to put my hands up and admit I’ve been guilty of doing this in the past, but surely my fellow atheists will accept that a lot of his ideas were good. Forgiveness for enemies, not casting judgment on others, treating the rich and the poor equally, roundly condemning violence. From a secular point of view, I'd say he's worthy of the same respect Gandhi deservedly enjoys, we just don't think he was divine.
Anyone agree?

well done mate.
stop the hatred spread the love!
unfortunately, like religious fanatics there are atheist fanatics who won't let you accept that opinion and will try to convince you to think like them.
When will people realise, we are ALL the same.

I agree, but the man may not be represented in the legend...can you imagine if Gandhi was raised to the same level as Christ in 500 years..certainly the story would be larger than the man and the real message of the man would begin to fade. What I've read about the Greeks suggests that they may have been involved in proving his divinity after his death more than anyone...and along that line of thought, I think Western thought in general was evolving into a society that was more compassionate

I wonder why sometimes people attack Jesus and his followers with concentrated venom if he doesn't exist? Do these same people attack Santa Claus and his believers? Then why such poison? The statements I read are often ill founded and illogical? As if Christianity was the cause of everything that went wrong in their life. Oddly the other night someone claimed that Christian drunk drivers were responsible for the deaths of two of their family members and the disfigurement of others. As much as I regret anyone's loss I have to admit it made me wonder. I have had a few friends die from drunk drivers and a sister who was hit and run by a drunk driver with her leg half torn off. There was no enquiry as to the religion or lack of by the drivers in these incidents. And whenever I hear of drunk driving deaths in the news I hear no mention or religious viewpoint of the driver. Which again makes me wonder how and why would someone want to find out the religion in such a tragedy? Finally if you choose not to believe that is your right but for someone to claim there is no proof of the existance of Jesus simply had decided to disregard the evidence that exists outside the writings of believers. Again I can't help but seeing that too many people are more interested in getting attention at any cost. A habit they weren't weaned from since childhood.

Well, one shouldn't speak ill of the dead but it's very questionable indeed that Jesus isn't wholly fictional, like Superman, but less original.
Even if there ever was such a person and he claimed to be God, the son of God, you have to conclude he was either a conman or a nut job; so, no, I don't agree.
Jesus can whistle for my respect and so can the sorry bunch who would claim to be Christians on the back of the obvious codswallop story.

I do agree that Jesus was an excellent moral example and a generally good guy. I must say though I certainly have no intention of plucking out my own eyes rather than look at a woman lustfully.

If you acknowledge Christ's goodness that's good.We don't expect you to accept His Divinity; at the time He was crucified only about 30 people saw Him after the Ressurection. No body is forcing anybody to believe.

I don't have any issues with Jesus as a person. You are right, he did have a few good ides.
I do have issues with the people who apparently follow his teaching but cause nothing but hatred and bigotry in the world. Those who kill in the name of Jesus who was all about peace.
I can't stand hypocrites.

None of the ideas expressed in the bible attributed to jesus are not original to jesus. Jesus was a fictional character. And all those ideas said to come from him were plagiarized from older religions and societies.

It's true that Jesus was a good teacher and moral guide in an immoral age. That though doesn't make, HIM, a Deity.

You are making the unwanted assumption that 'he' existed as a person, that anything attributed to 'him' he accully said, and that anything in the New Testament has been worthy of respect and not the derision that I heap upon it.
