Im starting a new job and want to do well.Never wairessed before.

Act like you want to be there, even if it's a total lie. And stop by. I will never leave more than 10% (and often far less) if my glass is empty and I catch my server hanging out behind the bar or chatting with the seating staff. Minimal interest in my dining experience will always translate to minimum interest in leaving a tip.

Just be attentive and nice. Do all you can to make your table happy. However, since you've never waitressed before, you have to realize that some people are just plain rude, mean and disrespectful; BUT, don't let those people get you down. Just try. Also, go into the restaurant open minded. Find a waitress or two, who seems well respected by their peers and management and is someone whom seems to be making money. Get some pointers off of them.

You've never done this before, so just remember to stick w/ it b/c it will be very difficult in the beginning. But with time you will get better and make good money.

You have to have a great attitude and genuinely like people. You must be able to deal with all types of people. You have to be polite and courteous. You must really like being of service to others. You must have a very good memory. Always have a ready smile (but don't fake it) and a kind word. If you are not a happy person to begin with, waitressing is not the job for you. The best advise I can give you is to acknowledge your customer, even if you are too busy to tend to them or if they are not next in order to be seated/served. ex : If you are overloaded with tables and on your way back to the kitchen with someone else's refills, stopping for 2 seconds to look at your table on the way and a simple "I will be right back to check on you guys" may be the difference in getting a tip or not. or: A lot of times if it gets busy, the kitchen may be behind and this can make it seem as if you are a slow waitress, I always liked to check up with my customers who were waiting a long time for their food and let them know I checked on their order and it will be out in _ minutes. also make sure to keep an eye on who needs refills. Rule of thumb I used --- check on table at least 3 times: 1. assure them food will be right out, 2. refills, 3. and need anything else, refills or to go box and the ticket. just never let them think u forgot about them (they don't know the hold ups behind the counter), and if you goof apologize - it will get u further than hoping they don't notice, and oh yeah smile!

Just do your job. Stay on top of refills, be attentive but don't hover.

With regards to the first answer "flirt a lot"...that may or may not be good advice. I know that I tip based on service not some waitress that I know I don't have a snowball's chance with flirting with me.

Good service, good tip. Bad service, no tip.

Red is a DOPE. Always remember, "Hot food should be served HOT, cold food should be served COLD". Don't try to be cute. Do your job. Watch what is going on in the room around you, if you are going to "do" your nails, go out of the dining room before inspecting them! At least pretend to be watching all your tables, and assisting whenever they need anything.
You don't have to work real hard, often, to work smart, and if you keep people happy, your tips should be good, and complaints less.

Smile, say hi, look the customers in the eyes.

Keep drinks refilled if the refills are free.

Wait until they've eaten more than one bite of their food before asking "is everything ok?".

Leave extra napkins unless your workplace has paper towels on the table.

Always be over-generous with refills of drinks, and chips and salsa (if where you works has that)

Just be really personable... really try to servant's hear towards the people who you are serving. They will notice and want to give you a big tip in appreciation. At least I always do.

Make sure your customers have something to drink at all times. Don't let their sodas, water, coffee, mixed drinks, go empty. Make sure to acknowledge their existence, even if it's going to be a min before you can take thier order. Bring water and menus right away and let them know you will be there shortly. Smile.

Just imagine you are a customer and how do you want to be served.Of course there are different people in this world,but basically we all are looking for friendly service and genuine smile.
