I was told I was allergic to bees when I was about 8 years old. Since then I have been stung only once about 5 years ago and noticed no bad reaction. Could the allergy have gone away, and how (besides getting stung voluntarily) can I find out if I am still allergic?

You are probably only allergic to one type of bee. Like maybe you are allergic to wasps and not yellow jackets or vice versa. Go to an allergist and they can test you and find out what you are allergic to. They can also innoculate you against whatever you allergic to. Meaning they give you shots (in tiny doses) of what you are allergic to, and over time you will become immune to the sting.

Until the body is introduced to the allergen, you will not have a reaction. So, it is true that you will not have a reaction the first time. Typically, the reaction gets worse with each subsequent exposure to the allergen. Since you have reacted, I would recommend visiting an allergist who can test you for bee allergies (an also prescribe an epi-pen for you to carry in the case of a severe reaction). My husband is allergic to wasp stings and had a reaction a couple of months ago. He had a reaction as a child, but not as an adult (so he did not have an epi-pen). The symptoms came on quickly, but he took Benedryl and it slowed the reaction. He also sat still to decrease his heart rate and slow the progress of the toxin. If you get a sting and start reacting, take 2 Benedryl and seek medical attention right away. Within 30 seconds of having an epinephrine shot, my husband regained his color and felt immensely better. He now carries epi-pens where-ever he goes.

You can grow out of your allergies. To find out if you are still allergic you would have to go to the doctors and take an allergy test.

Yes to get an allergy test is the only true way of telling. Sorry.

Talk to your allergist. They can probably test you for that.
