i have a 7 months old puppy called Lola & an 11 months old puppy called Roxy.
I went to the vet the other day because Lola needed the microchip and her 2nd vaccination & Roxy needed her last vaccination. The vet said that Lola doesnt need her last puppy vaccination because of her age already so just come back next year for the booster. Is this right?

Lola needed at least two vaccines to stimulate immunity. The reason we vaccinate puppies more than that is because their mother's immunity overrides any shots we may give, so we time shots around the timeframe the mothers immunity in the pup starts to weaken.

By the time they are 7 months old, there is no more immunity left from the mother, so we know the vaccine will stimulate their immunity and protect the dog.

Bottem line...your vet is correct, (and the shots were late...so be better :)

It kinda depends on the timing of the previous shots.

The reason so many are given is due to the puppies mothers antibodies. These antibodies take awhile to wear off, and if the vaccines are given while these are still active the shot won't offer any immunity.

If you are worried about your dog's immunity you can have a titer test done. This is a blood test that determines your dogs immunity level to disease commonly vaccinated for.

My dogs have yearly titers done instead of shots. If the levels are good, no shot, if they are a little low, they go back in for a booster. I'd do this with rabies as well, but that is a government regulated vaccine, with that vaccine I go as long as I can before they get a booster.

Overvaccinating has been linked to health issues, so if I can avoid it, I do.

That would be my recommendation, instead of hurrying out and getting her the last shot right away, have a titer done to see if she NEEDS the last shot or not.

It depends what vaccines Lola had before you got her. Generally, puppies should be vaccinated at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and the final booster, including rabies at 16 weeks (4 months). So if she already had her first booster when you got her, she should be fine.

Did you see the injection being given? Usually there are 2 needles in the final appointment (in Canada at least!). If they gave her the same number as Roxy, they are both good until next year!

Have fun with your puppies and good job getting their vaccines and microchipping!

Yes it sounds right if we are talking about the distemper vax. When we give the vaccine it depends on how old the dog is and how many times we have given it to them.

yep that's right, trust your vet,he does this stuff daily...it's just like if you got a dog at two who needed shots, you wouldn't go back and get it puppy shots,it would be given the dosage it needs at it's age..........
