My daughter goes to kindergarten in a public school. It is only half day, but the parents can choose full day service for a fee to the school district. So her class lasts the whole day. It is this fee that I am not sure if deductible.

No, kindergarten expenses don't qualify for dependent care credits. See page 208 of IRS Publication 17, under heading "education" in chapter 32 on child and dependent care credit if you want confirmation of this - it's very specific that pre-K can be used, but not k. Sorry.

Technically, Judy is right. However, you can argue that kindergarten in public school is free for half-day. You are essentially paying a fee for daycare services the school provides. This allows you and your spouse to work. I would claim the expense on Form 2441. You will get the credit, no questions asked.

Yes, your expense is deductible. Dependent care expense. You will need the taxpayer i.d. of the school, just call the office and ask. You will also need the total paid in 2006. Go to IRS.gov.
