Well that all depends.

If you have wet hair, and want it straight, you would want to blow dry your hair. I have used the wet to straight hair straighteners and i was wary of how my hair was after using them. If you use a round brush to dry your hair, you can achieve a straight look. There is a brand called Warren & Tricomi that have a brush that is used to straighten hair. It is the principle of a flat iron, but in the form of a vented brush, so that if you haven't mastered the art of the round brush, you can still get a great blow out.

But if you let your hair dry before straightening it, a flat iron is a great tool. But you want to make sure that the iron you have is ceramic. If you have a metal one, it will damage your hair.

No matter what, I recommend using heat protectents on your hair, whether it be when blow drying your hair or straightening it with a flat iron, that way your hair is less likely to suffer damage and breakage.

Both cause damage.
However for both there are ways to prevent damage.

When blow drying your hair always towel dry it first. Leave it wrapped in a towel for 5-10 minutes if you can. That way the towel gets most of the water off your hair. Then when you do blow dry it use a heat protecting product. The shampoo and conditioners aren't always enough. The protector will protect your hair through blow drying and flat ironing.

For a flat iron I know salon ones are expensive however for $100 you can get the professional one I (and Kristen off Laguna Beach and good new york salons) use off folica.com
this one is mine http://www.folica.com/Solia_Tourmalin_d1558.html it comes in different sizes and comes with a bonus heat pad/carry bag.
With this one I don't even need to use a protector because it doesn't damage my hair.

Just remember not to use the highest heat. Try to use the lowest heat possible that will still get your hair straight.

I blow dried my hair for a period of time and I flat ironed my hair for a period of time and my hair is less damaged now that I flat iron it with a ceramic iron when it's dry.
The damage happens when you cause breakage by pulling and tugging the hair and by improperly brushing it.
I only brush my hair in the shower while conditioning.
I suggest the T3 flat iron and the line of shampoos and conditioners by Pureology.
Treat your hair like a baby and it will pay you back 3 x over :-)

yea definitely better ,when you blowdry your hair , you arent using a chemical like you do when you straighten it , any time you use a chemical , it is more damaging , i am a stylist in an upscale salon and see alot of people who have damaged thier hair from chemical straightners .
