I found my dog 2 years ago. She was wild and starving. Since we got her she eats constantly (Iams Mini Chunks) but is still very skinny. We never saw any indication of worms, but we decided to go to Petco. We bought some worming meds and it seems that she has slowly started to gain more muscle---Did she have worms???

actually, we have noticed that our dogs are pretty scrawny the first two years and then they start filling out and gaining shape. most dogs are finally mature at this age. I'm guessing that the wormer was just a broad spectrum intestinal wormer so it wouldn't have hurt but you would think that treating for what would have been a two year ongoing problem would have taken multiple wormings at the proper interval to clean the dog of all stages of worms.

Maybe maybe not.. The Iams is a crappy food, so it's likely she isn't getting good nutrition and that's why she is thin.. You shouldn't worm a dog when you don't know what kind of worms they might have or if they even have worms.. That's a little silly.. Alot silly.. Would you take a medication that you knew little about, just in case you might in the future have a problem with something??
Find out first before worming your dog..

Probably... you did the right thing and if you still have questions call the vet and tell them what the situation is and ask for an opinion. You also need to make sure you are using something like Frontline for fleas as the worms are transmitted by the fleas cause the fleas carry them as a parasite then when the fleas bite the dog the worms transfer. I personally like Frontsite best but it is expensive so talk to your Petco people and see what options are there if you don't want to go that route.

Good luck!

most likely that she did. you should take a stool sample
to the vet after she has been off the pill for a few weeks
because sometimes they need more than one dose.
also you should get her checked out to make sure it was
worms because maybe its something else and the worm
medicine will make it worse.
it could also be because she was starved her stomach
shrunk and she cant eat a lot at once. try giving her
the same amount of food a couple of times a day and some
treats in between. but you should check her stool.

There's no way of knowing without having her tested before you have her the dewormer. Not all over the counter dewormers are 100% effective, so you could certainly wait a while and take her in to be checked out.
Also, checking for intestinal parasites is standard when your pet goes for an annual check up and vaccinations.

The only way to know is to have a fecal exam by a vet. She may have heart worms and that must be diagnosed and treated by a vet.

See a vet. OTC wormers don't take care of most worms and you're throwing your money away. She probably still has worms. She probably could use some vaccinations and spay her PLEASE!
