It really saddens me to see some of the comments on this question. It was a simple straight forward question. So many of you have taken this opportunity to call down religion and judge others.

Try to have some tolerance for other peoples preferences.

My children started Sunday school when they were three. However, as a parent, I was and am their primary catechist from when they were born. Formal Religious Education, for the Sacraments, starts in first grade. It is a two-year program. At the end of second grade they do their First Communion. At our church we have Club 345 for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. It is post-sacrament and is mainly bible study, worship and praise. Then we have a middle school ministry that does basically the same thing. After that they start the Confirmation program.

Children can start Sunday school as early as 2 years Old. Many churches offer a Nursery for under two as well. Believe it or not, at that early age, it can make an impression on your child.

Catechism is similar in ways. Sunday school is offered every Sunday and is continuous from early on through high school, Jr. High and High school are better known as Youth Groups. Catechism is similar in that they teach about the Bible. Sunday school usually teaches a little more in depth with explanations suitable to the age group. Catechism is a very short time period with the basics rolled into it.

Even bed babies and toddlers can start learning by seeing pictures and by having stories read to them and songs sung to them. They really start to learn in the 2 & 3 yr. old classes. I am not familiar with catechism but I'm sure it isn't the same thing. My own son could sing Jesus Loves Me by the time he was 2 yrs. old. Children can learn at a very early age.

Depends on the diocese. Usually catechism begins in First Grade, but some parishes have a Kindergarten.

My girls are 3 and 5 and both attend "Sunday School". I put it in quotes because technically at this age it's really just daycare with a VeggieTale movie, pink lemonade and an art project with a religious theme.

But true Sunday School begins about kindergarten, when kids can memorize verses.

I assume 'catechism' is a Catholic thing. It's not the same thing, because non-Catholics don't do 'catechism'.

The age which kids start Sunday school varies from church to church-some might only have a program for Kindy-Year 2,some churches have Kindy-Year 8,some churches have creche for pre-schoolers as well.

I don't know about Catholics...but I know some Christian parents whose kids go to church with them every sunday from birth and most churches have age level classes, so every year is a different class and the material gets more and more complicated and in depth. I know my prof's 3 year old kids ask some pretty compelling questions about God.

No real sunday school teaches children the truth. Catechism teaches children lies.
