a small toy breed is probebly best. It can sleep with her, go with her, will follow her everywhere, she can dress it, groom it, easier to wash and care for, less to feed. My maltese is adorable and can be carried in a purse.

Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.
If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:
Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.
Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.
German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.
Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.
Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise
You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home. If breed is not an issue you could always adopt a pup (not an adult) from your local pound or shelter. They come spayed or neutered, up to date on vaccinations and you can find all ages, sizes and breeds.

Any dog can be the best breed for a 12 year old as long as you are the pack leaders, socialize the dog, train the dog and above all remain calm/assertive at all times with the dog. Remember there are NO bad dogs; only BAD human's.

i understand your question but it isn't that simple. just becasue a dog is acertain breed doesn't mean it will have a certain personallity. also the personallity of the girl matter alot too. personally i like big dogs like huskeys labs st bernards and little dogs like yorkies drive me nuts.
best would be to get a dog that by nature isn't aggessive but any dog can be so that's ot sure fire. plus take into account where you live. in a suburb a large dog may not be great becasue it won't have enough space or in like say arizona where it would be to hot for a colder climate dog like a huskey.
also dog personallity problems most labs love to dig, some dogs like to bark, some don't bark but howl at night like huskeys, some only bark at night... etc...
ther is no best breed for a twelve year old girl the is only a best breed for a specific individual.....

This all depends on whether you want a large or small dog and the living space you have available.
Golden Retriever for large (this is my favorite)
Beagle or Corgi for medium
Mini Schnauzer for small
You should also think about a loyal and cute mix from the local Humane Society as they are very loving and need good homes. I know you said pure bred but just think about it cause there is nothing wrong with a mix and they can give you just as much love as the others and are cheaper.

There is not one breed that is specifically better with children then another breed. Any dog can make a great pet - with proper training.
Anyway, you probably already know what I'm going to say - based on other questions. A mutt.
Mutts are cheaper then all purebreds, they come with their shots, they come fixed, and are often trained before sold from the shelter.

It depends on what you want in a dog. Border Collies are intelligent and love to play fetch but can be trained to work with livestock. Springer Spaniels make nice pets of a larger size and are beautiful animals. It also depends on how much room you have for the dog. Small dogs make good pets too. Beagles, snouzers, English bull dogs, golden retrievers, Jack Russel Terriors. Dozens I guess. Think about what you want from your animal and how much room you have. No matter the dog they all need lots of love and care to be the animal you want them to be.

you need to decide on the breed based on many things other than the person it will be for, long hair, activity level and size are very important. Labs are and great choice, they love kids are playful and active they love water. they are very hyper for the ist year and will wipe off your coffee table with the wagging tail for the first year or so. They shed. protection wise they can be very protective for both you and you home.
check the dogs annual page on the net and it may help you narrow down your decision

I own a shih tzu, and i know they always get a bad rap for being "old people dogs", or for being very unmaintainable, but i can honestly tell you that shih tzu's are very friendly and smart dogs, and with a short hair cut they are very maintainable. I think you should consider a shih tzu, but whatever dog you choose always remember to respect the dog and teach your daughter to do the same. The dog will only be as nice as it is treated...
