My sister was working while going to school so she barely made any money in 2006, roughly about 1500 over the summer. she can not find one of her W2's and only has one that she worked for $600. She is refusing to file because she can not find the other W2 and that she barely made any money.. what can happen if she doesnt file even though she barely made any money and that she lost her w2? and how much money would she make if she did file?

Nothing will happen if she doesn't file - with only that amount of income, she isn't required to. But she should still look for that other W-2 or request a copy from the employer - if she had anything withheld for federal income tax, she can file and get it refunded. No problem if she files late as long as it's not over 3 years late - there won't be a penalty, and she'll still get her refund.

If nothing was withheld, then she wouldn't get anything back if she filed.

She ought to re-think this. She probably doesn't owe anything, anyway, and may qualify for a little earned income credit (which is a refundable tax credit). She needs to contact the former employer to see if they will issue another copy of the W-2.

She can file to claim a refund for up to 3 years from the deadline for the original return, so she should be in good shape.

If she can't get the W-2, she can request a transcript of income received from the IRS. Sorry, I've seen them but don't know the process to get one. I think there's a link from the irs web site to apply for a transcript online. That's www.irs.gov.

She doesn't even need to file taxes if she made under 3000. She need not worry. If she did file, she probably would only get a small amount back. Plus I would need to know how much she claimed, etc. But yeah, single filier w/o dependents on 1500 bucks isn't going to get you much. Maybe 100.

Ken, yet I pay attention each so often that scholars are "exempt" from taxes. What does this advise? you're seen exempt of you owed no tax final twelve months and could not owe taxes this twelve months. while you're a based of your mothers and dads, you are able to earn as much as $5450 with out being project to earnings taxes Am I not think to pay or do i'm getting a number of it back or what? in case you have any federal or state withholdings, and you're making much less then $5450 this twelve months, you are able to report and get maximum of what you paid in federal and state earnings taxes. you won't be able to come back your social secure practices and medicare taxes back.
