when i ask other people about life, they say you should only be living for yourself.
But i am not sure if i agree with that. I really think i think about myself too much. I dont know how to stop it, i think i grew up like this. bcos my sister always tells me i should be writing letters, and my mum always tells me i should be with her, and my dad says i should be talking to him. But i dont want to, but apparently im hurting everyone in the process. Is this self-obsession/self-absorption. i dont know what to do.

A little self-absorption is normal. It sounds like you have alot of people pulling you different directions.
Taking care of yourself is not being selfish. Sometimes its okay to kick back and have some alone time. Your family is using alot of guilt. If you feel more comfortable giving them time then you select how much and when and the rest of the time you have for you your life and friends.
For example, make Sunday (or any other day) the day you call them and set time aside for a nice (short) visit. Every second saturday you'll pick out a card to drop to your sister.
Then do what you need to do. Sounds like you left home and they cant stand it. Its part of growing up, moving out and having an adult life. Some families have a hard time letting people do that. So dont be hard on them just draw a boundary and keep it. Eventually, they will get used to it.
Good Luck.

Its healthy to want to think about and spend some time only about yourself. I don't think its in excess. If your family members want some of your time, then give it to them. When you feel that you need to be alone or do things for yourself, just excuse yourself and say you have some things to attend to.

There is an old saying that for every 3 seconds somebody thinks about somebody else they spend 3 hours thinking about themself so you are normal.
