he must not be killed outright...he is to be told to re-establish the as-salat (the prayer) 3 times, if he refuses, then he is to be killed.

Tthe Quran is silent on the punishment for apostasy, though not the subject itself. The Quran speaks repeatedly of people going back to unbelief after believing, but does not confirm that they should be killed or punished.

The hadith "Whosoever changes his religion, Kill Him", has been used by critics of Islam. Islamic scholars point out it is important to understand the hadith in proper historical context. The order was at a time when the nascient Muslim community in Medina was fighting for its very life, and there were many schemes, by which the enemies of Islam would try to entice rebellion and discord within the community. Clearly any defection would have serious consequences for the Muslims, and the hadith may well be about treason, rather than just apostasy.

This makes an assumption which is not true - that all Muslims in every country approach the Faith in the same manner.

However, the literal answer is - the same penalty the Hebrew Scriptures give for apostasy - death.

if a muslim abandons islam and becomes an atheist then he will get what the non-muslims will get in the life after which is hell.

a muslim community is responsible to each of the muslim members..as muslims been described as brothers and sisters..if one of the muslim abandos islam and it is the responsibility of the muslim community to help him and show him the correct path and work as hard as possible to bring him back to islam..but as Allah said,
"la iqra ha fiddin"
theres no forcement to accept islam..

the community could only work on it but they dont have the power to force him back to islam..if they had tried then they had done their responsibilities..other than that is between the muslim himself and Allah s.w.t

some ulama' had said that the penalty of death should been given to them but there is a condition..one who abandon islam and giving trouble to other muslim such as he was the one who responsible to hundreds of muslims for abondon islam then he is compulsary been killed as he is given disaster in islam community..

According to me a muslim who understand the holy qur'an and hadeth, the islamic community will not punish him/her for becoming an atheist or unbeliver.Allah the only one God spoke in the Surah 109 Al Kaafiruun that your God/religion is yours and my God/religion is mine. There is no force of becoming or out going of islamic religion. The choice depends on his/her faith to Allah, prophet Muhammad pbuh and the holy qur'an.In islamic teaching becoming a muslim and then converting to atheist rest on the related person himself/herself..He/she wiill responsible and accountable for his/her own. doings to Allah. In line with islamic teaching he/she will go to hell.We will not kill or stone him/her until die except he/she attacked, insulted/slandered muslims and their religion.Muslims can live in togetherness peacefully with atheists and unbelievers or infidels.

This would surely depend on the sect of Muslim
you are talking about.

Some would surely prescribe death.

Others might weep at your infidelity and then
ask what's on TV.
