1. The attitude is wrong - "the have to" attitude misses the "God loves a cheerful giver" part of Scripture.
2. Principle: God has always had His Portion (tree of life, tree of knowledge of good and evil among all the trees of Eden), Abraham paid "the King of Salem" (a type of Jesus) 10% - Genesis 14:18-20, Jacob gave a tenth of all Genesis 28:22, the heave offerings of the Law was the tithe for the support of the Levites (ministers are a gift from God to the Church and are to be supported by gifts from God's people) - Numbers 18:6-21, Ephesians 4:8, 11; there is a curse upon you if you do not pay tithes and give offerings - Mal. 3:8-10; In the New Testament we live under grace not Law. The "law of Grace" teaches taking the "high road" and not the low road - where the Law was "strict" - the law of Grace demands even more...because now it is a matter of heart and not just deed. So to gavel at 10% tithes is to reveal a heart still bound by the Law, for the "law of grace" will immediately lead you to pay the 10% without compulsion and cheerfully while leading you to give far beyond that out of Love and a grateful heart. You pay your utility bills automatically because it is just something you do - so is tithes (10%) for the Christian.....that is the bare minimum. But a Christian truly in love with His Lord will not only pay the 10% without complaining (they won't even think about it - it is automatic - like a utility bill) but they actively look for ways to sow generous "seed" (money) into furtile ground (anointed ministries) to produce a harvest (of provision and souls).

The Israelites gave 10%, and even some years up to 23% !
We know the spirit of giving hasnt changed because God commissioned the church and we see the early church in Acts taking up collections and helping the poor in the church.
How else is the church physically supposed to maintain a presence here on earth without money?

Malachi says it as well as it is in the law.
Le 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.
Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.
Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

Christians are under no obligation to tithe or give ten percent of their income. There is no scriptural support for any such claim. Tithing was done in ancient Israel under the Law covenant.

Prophets preached the Word of God. I don't think I have the prove to you that there were prophets in the Bible. A tithe means a tenth. A clear exposition of the tithe is given in Mal. 3: 8-18, in which it is shown that blessings from the payment of tithing are both temporal and spiritual, and failure to pay an honest tithe is a form of robbery.

Hebrews 7:2 is the only reference to 10%, but the reference in Malachi 3:8-10 is the real promise to those that pay tithing.

try these:
Leviticus 27:30-32
2 Chronicles 31:3-7
Numbers 18:26 says specifically 10 percent
same with Deut. 26:12
I think the point is to give a portion of your income to the Lord...but I don't think it's about how much...I think it's the point of it...so we don't love money or material possessions....It's having a servants heart...I don't think God wants anything that we don't want to give. Besides, it's not like God needs the money.
Hope that helps!

The word "tithe" actually means one tenth. (the tenth part of agricultural produce or personal income set apart as an offering to God or for works of mercy, or the same amount regarded as an obligation or tax for the support of the church, priesthood, or the like.). That definition is on www.dictionary.com.
There are several reference to tithing in the Bible.
Lev 27:30 And all the tithe of the land, [whether] of the seed of the land, [or] of the fruit of the tree, [is] the LORD'S: [it is] holy unto the LORD.
Deu 14:23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
Lev 27:32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, [even] of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.
Deu 14:22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

The only people who were commanded to give a tithe (tenth) unto God were the children of Israel. The law which God gave to Israel through Moses required Isael to give one-tenth of their goods to God. These verses teach the tithing regulations God expected the nation of Israel to obey: Lev. 27:30; Num. 18:21, Deut. 12:6; 14:28 26:12; 2Ch 31:5; Neh. 10:38; 12:44; 13:12; Mal 3:10.
The gospel of Jesus Christ does not command a tithe (10%). Whereas Israel was to give a tithe, we are taught to "lay by in store as we have been prospered (1 Cor. 16:2), and as we "purposeth in our heart" (2 Cor. 9:7), which will "prove the sincerity of our love" (2 Cor. 8:8). Giving which is void of first giving one's heart to the Lord does not please God (Mk.12:41-44; 2 Cor. 8:5; 9:6-7).
God will be pleased with the giver who understands that all he possesses belongs to the Lord. Such an attitude allows him to give generously, cheerfully and according to his prosperity. Such giving cannot be forced or demanded as a debt which is due.
I still give 10% or more, myself - for that is what I feel God wishes me to give. I also give of my time, which you may consider as well. I give of my soul, my heart - that's is worth more than any money.

Tithes were in the Old Law Covenant.
When Jesus was nailed to the torture stake he fulfilled the Old Law. We are not under all those rules any longer. We are under two commandments...#1..To love Jehovah with your whole heart, mind, soul and strength #2..To love your neighbor as yourself.
