That person got a lot of wisdom as a result of a lot of suffering. They wish they could have avoided that much pain, even at the cost of wisdom.

YES! You have to suffer until you give up suffering. And when you give up of everything, what you will be left with is your true Self. You are enlighten. You will finally know what you truly are, and you will see psychological suffering, as a result of living believing in ideas, and all ideas are false... What you will learn is to understand of what is the Truth, you can't have any ideas, any doubts, any beliefs, you have to really feel it, and you have to go there on your own, nobody can take you there. Words are symbols, or ideas, they only can go closer to the Truth, but they can never BE the Truth. Because words are human inventions, to know the Truth you have to use Nature's tools. To be enlighten, it's not required to suffer, actually doesn't require anything, you have to give up of all ideas. But you can only prolong the non enlightenment, only deny it with doubts, but it is like a river, you are only trying to stop the flow. When you give up of stopping it, you will finally flow in your own river. The true wisdom is not knowing allot, is precisely the contrary, is knowing that there's nothing to know.

Sorry, I have not heard this one for a long time now and it is still a bunch of crap as it was originally.Suffering only brings bad mental and physical health, unhealthy eating habits, and pain. No wisdom is gained by pain except for Jesus Christ who suffered pain in the desert to be cleansed by God for His Holy mission in life.

I think it means that some one would prefer to suffer less and be stupid than suffer more and be considered smart and wise. I'll let you take it from there.

it means that you learn from experience, i would rather be in all the pain in the world and end up with experience and wisdom than not be in pain and be just plain pathetic lol, so yeah thats my interpretation of it :)
