Tonsillectomy is not done as readily anymore. However, if you have chronic tonsillitis i.e.; freq episodes with inflammed (red) and infected tonsils (swollen and enlarged ) , sore throats, high fevers; and esp difficulty in swallowing;(pharyngitis) you should have them removed if a round of antibiotics do not do the trick.

Tonsillectomy may be indicated when the patient::

Experiences frequent bouts of acute tonsillitis. The number indicating tonsillectomy varies with the severity of the episodes. One case, even severe, is generally not enough for most surgeons to decide tonsillectomy is indicated.

Has chronic tonsillitis, consisting of persistent, moderate-to-severe throat pain.

Has multiple bouts of peritonsillar abscess.

Has sleep apnea (stopping or obstructing breathing at night due to enlarged tonsils or adenoids)

Difficulty eating or swallowing due to enlarged tonsils

Thru out my childhood and nursing student years, I suffered from chronic tonsillitis. Tonsillectomy wasn't performed until i was 26 yrs old. And the recovery phase wasn't too pleasant. When this surgery is performed on children; the recovery is uneventful. Normally, tonsillitis is a childhood disease.

Now, I don't have febrile episodes and all the discomforts from chronic tonsillitis esp the severe sore throat and difficulty in swallowing. The EENT surgeon who performed the tonsillectomy informed me that i must have suffered thru my childhood, and school yrs as my tonsils were enlarged.
Now, I can drink cold fluids without hesitation and fear of getting a sore throat (phayngitis) and hoarse voice(laryngitis).

If you suffered from chronic tonsillitis and want to improve the quality of your life; you should have this simple surgery. My daughter also used to have chronic tonsillitis . Therefore I had them taken out when she was only 5. I didn't want her to suffer like me from a treatable condition. . .

Tonsilitis

Bright red tonsils
White or yellow goo covering your tonsils
A sore throat
Pain when you swallow
Pain or swelling in your neck
A hot forehead
Stinky breath even after you’ve brushed your teeth
If your doctor decides you have tonsillitis, he will probably give you an antibiotic, a medicine that gets rid of bad bacteria. If you have tonsillitis a lot, your doctor will contact an otolaryngologist (oh-toe-lair-in-goll-oh-gist), a doctor who specializes in taking care of the ears, nose, and throat. This doctor might tell you to take some more antibiotics but if your throat continues to hurt, you might be told you need a tonsillectomy.

A tonsillectomy (ton-seh-leck-teh-me) is an operation where your tonsils are taken out of your throat. If you have tonsillitis a lot, or if your tonsils get really big and you have trouble breathing, your doctor and parents may decide they need to be removed.

i would hold on to my tonsils or you hold on to your tonsils as long as you can,,, i forget why, but there are some good reasons, one of them is when your tonsils are taken, there are more sore throats, tonsils are a really good thing to have,so do not allow the doctors to have a free for all,
