Yup. It's the tapetum lucidum. Animals like cats, which possess good night vision have an extra layer of tissue in the back of the eye--the tapetum lucidum. This tissue takes all of the dim light and reflects it into the retina (the part of the eye that processes what you see), so the retina gets more light, and can effectively see more absorbed image. When a bright light hits the animal's eyes, the tapetum lucidum will reflect quite a bit of it back out of the front of the eye--this is what you are seeing. Generally cats have a yellow/green/orange color, but the passage of the light through blood vessels can make the reflection look red (the same thing that causes red eye in pictures, since we don't have reflective tissue in our eyes). Some animal's tapetum reflection is always red (crocodiles), but I doubt that's what was in your yard :).

I have one cat whose eyes also glow a beautiful, deep red, and the first time I saw them, it was kinda startling, as all the others'eyes glow yellow. A cat I just got has a faint red glow to her eyes at times as well, so it could well have been a cat you saw. Kinda nice colour, I think, although when you are not expecting to see two red glowing orbs, it can look a bit "demon-ish".

I have a 4 cats, used to have 2 more, so i know that cats glow eyes in the dark. It doesn't really matter what color. If the animal was small, tall tail, fast, it was a cat. Hope that's what you're looking for.

That was a cat. The back of cat's eyes has this little 'film' that reflects light at night, even when there it really little, and depending on where you are standing the eyes can glow red, yellow or even greenish. It is normal to see them red when they stare at you and there is little light.

The cat's eyes were reflecting light. Even if the light seemed dim to you there was enough to cause redeye just like in photos.
Or maybe....it was a kittymonster! lol

Hate to tell you this, but it sounds like the eyes of a rat. I have three cats, their eyes are not red, no matter what the light is. Be careful.
