Isn't it the word of God or the word of Man? It would seem that the god portrayed in the Old Testament is jealous and mean. But isn't this the word of god as well? Hmm.

A very valid question. How could Paul (Saul of Tarsus) erase G-d's LAW? It's ridiculous to think that G-d would imbue a human body on Earth with His essence and have that "personification" of Him ERASE a 1,400 year old covenant with His people.

The Bible is a progressive revelation. If you skip the first half of any good book and try to finish it; you will have a hard time understanding the characters, the plot, and the ending. Even so, the New Testament is only completely understood when it is seen as being built upon the foundation of the events, characters, laws, sacrificial system, covenants, and promises of the Old Testament (OT). If we only had the New Testament (NT), we would come to the gospels and not know why the Jews were looking for a Messiah (a Savior King). Without the OT, we would not understand why this Messiah was coming (see Isaiah 53); we would not have been able to identify Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah through the many detailed prophecies that were given concerning Him (e.g.., His birth place (Micah 5:2); His manner of death (Psalm 22, especially vv. 1,7-8, 14-18; Psalm 69:21, etc.), His resurrection (Psalm 16:10), and many more details of His ministry (Isaiah 52:13f.; 9:2, etc.).

Dear Skunkgrease -
1. I agree with the Old Testament. The entire bible has one common theme- salvation through Jesus. There are over 300 prophesies about Jesus in the Old Testament. It points to Him as Messiah. The New Testament shows how Jesus paid the penalty for sin, providing the way of salvation.

2. The entire bible is the Word of God.

3. Was it a mean God that delivered a nation from slavery? Jealous yes, righteously so.

Hmm, read and study the bible. If you need help with that email me.

Sincerely - Redeemed

The old testament is of the law; thats why it appears harsh and it is, because law is harsh. The new testament is grace. We only need the old testament to understand the new. We are no longer under law. Christians are made new creatures that fulfill the law in their lives. "the law is for the lawless". I really get tired of Christians saying we are still under law and need the 10 commandments. They just point out sin and lead to Jesus Christ. Christians are not the old man, but a new creature. As long as we think law we are living as the old man.

Of course it is the word of God. Just like the New Testament.
There couldn't be a New Testament with out the Old Testament.

I believe in the Old Testament. You have to have the Old Testament to fully understand the New Testament. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, He does not change.

The God of the OT is the God of the New Testament as well. You really can't have the NT without the OT. The entire Bible is the Word of God.The God in the OT is not mean, i assure you. if anything he is gracious and merciful.

From Moses, to Jesus, the best way to change your life for the better, was to assume the guilt, and have a priest remove that guilt. The OT was included, to show how that guilt had become oppressive. Jesus introduced forgiveness, through a personal relationship with God that didn't require Priests, temples, animal sacrifices, or a million other requirements of the Law.

I've heard that rabbi's rarely aggree on anything, but they keep the books anyway.

The Old Testament is so important for many reasons. I may not like all that it has to say (regarding slavery and other topics like that), but I just have to wait to ask God personally these questions. I'm sure He has some logical answers. The OT has history, life lessons, and prophecy. Jesus referred to OT authors many times, so obviously it is critical to read those books.

Christianity cannot be explained or justified without the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew Bible stands alone!

Jews don't presume to understand Christianity without ever having read the "New" Testament. Why do Christians claim to understand Judaism without ever having read the Talmud?
