Okay, don't take anyone's advice EXCEPT the people that said to chill the onions first. It truly is the only method that works.

This time of year, NOTHING seems to help much. Some onions just have more sulfur than others. You might try switching to scallions until the nicer, milder onions come out. Chives are great, too! And you can grow them in a pot and have them handy anytime.
However, if you'd like to hear some of the crazier things I've tried (and they've worked sometimes!), here's a short list:
Wear swimming goggles.
Stuff your nostrils with tissue.
Cut your onions near an open flame (candle or gas burner -- can be dangerous!)
Wear a surgical mask.
Here's a great way though: use a food processor, and freeze what you don't use right away. You won't cry if you hold your breath and turn your face away when you open up the food processor lid. You'll also get really finely chopped onion.
Another trick is to cut onions bigger than you usually would. You'll still cry, but the time will be limited.
Good luck!

A good way to eliminate the crying is to put the onion in the freezer for about 15-30 before chopping. try this next time.

the other poster that said breathing through your mouth and not your nose is a sure fire way to keep the tears away while chopping onions. Be careful, if you even talk and let a little bit of air in your nose, it is all over! If you just breathe through your mouth you will be fine!

I keep my onions in the vegetable bin in the refrigerator. I eat onions almost on a daily basis and I never cry when I peel them.

Light a candle or have an open flame (gas burner) going right next to the onion. Works like a charm!

Light a candle and let it burn near where you're cutting the onion. The flame will burn up the chemical (or most of it anyway) that causes your eyes to water.

Try buying the dried minced onions from the spice section in the store. They soften up when they are cooked and they taste the same, plus you don't have to cut them!!

take the brown skin off the onion then slice it in half once after that, rinse the two halfs unter water for a little while (dont worry, it dosnt wash any flavour away) then carry on slicing, that should help.
