At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “Take this bread. It is my body.” Then he said, “Take this and drink. This is my blood. Do this in memory of me.”
Catholics believe this was the First Eucharist, that through a miracle the bread and wine actually became the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
Catholics reenact the Last Supper during every Mass, where God, acting through the priest, changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
This is a great sacrament of thanksgiving and unity of Catholics.
The first time a Catholic (of any age) receives the Eucharist is called their First Communion and is very special.
But remember there is also a Second Communion, a Third Communion, etc.
With love in Christ.

Because we believ that Communion is truly the Bpdy and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Children spend much time in preparation for this wonderful occasion- the first time they get to receive the Eucharist!
Fist COmmunion is a way for the entire parish to celebrate with them.

Because it's supposed to be a very special thing in the life of a catholic. It is the first time you taste the blood of christ. Sounds creepy, but that's what it is for them.
My parents were catholic, but not very strong about their beliefs so they didn't make me do my first communion, which I thank them for. But, they baptized me when I was a month old... they'll pay for that one ¬¬. LOL.

The Roman rite of the CAtholic Church feels a child should understand what he/she is receiving.
However, the Byzantine rite gives communion to infants.
