The fuse protects the wire and vehicle from a short circuit. If you connect a wire to the battery without a fuse and the wire gets pinched or shorted, the battery can provide enough current to melt the insulation on the wire. When a wire overheats, it takes along whatever is next to it. The result is a car-be-cue.

Put the fuse in-line on the wire, as close to the battery as possible. Any wire between the battery and the fuse won't be protected if there's a short.

The fuse are used to protect the electric circuits from excessive current flowing through the components and wires. Fuses always have a number on them i.e.(10A, 25A,30A) those numbers represent the maximum flow of current allowed, any current bigger than the number will cause the fuse to blow. That way it will prevent the excessive current from going into your amps, radio, car's electrical system, thus protecting it.
