The tithe (10%) was set up for the Jewish priests, who could not own land therefore could not provide for themselves. The tithe was supposed to be 10% of the persons increase and that did not always mean money.
Why do people not study the word and learn? Why do they still believe they must give a 'tithe', rather than give joyfully?

They have been preached to by the pastors to tithe. So the law was put on them.
Why, for the money.
Are you slowly starting to get the picture that the pastors lie?
A person is to read the Bible, seek the Truth and ask the Teacher, The Holy Spirit to teach you the Truth.
The Truth should be the most important thing to you.

How is it you know this now?
Who told you of the law?
Who told you you are not under the levitical law?
Who told you that the pastor was not a levitical priest and had no right whatever to collect tithes?

It appears that people are relying on men to teach them rather than God.
They do not read and they only look at the Bible when in Church.

Ask the Truth for the Truth He will give it to you.

Selah!

First, the law is not done away with. The tithe is still in effect to maintain the organizations ability to operate as a religion. What is not proper there is that the earnings should shared to government of the city or country in the form of tax.
Since they applied for the separation of the church and state, the church must not have any part in running the city or country politically and the country must have no sanction over the rites, rituals and beliefs of the church or churches.
However, with the growing businesses competing with public and private legitimate business establishments which they have have been doing in many cities including their takes on the contributions or tithes imposed by their organizations, their unshared wealth to the government has contributed to the dwindling accounts of the city coffers. The Old Testament Law of Tithing is not done away with yet but it has to be given some serious thought about its contribution back to the citizens who are mostly their members of the congregation.

The New Testament nowhere assigns a certain percentage of income to set aside, but only says it is to be “in keeping with his income” (1 Corinthians 16:2). The Christian church has essentially taken the 10% figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving. Although the New Testament does not identify a specific amount or percentage to give, it does talk about the importance and benefits of giving. They should give as they are able, “in keeping with his income.” Sometimes that means giving more than a tithe, sometime that may mean giving less than a tithe. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Each and every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom as to whether to participate in tithing and/or for how much he or she should give (James 1:5). “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The law was not "done away with" it was "fulfilled", Matt 5:17. Meaning the law of sacrifice for sin, (you no longer need an animal sacrifice to pay, Jesus paid it all.) The law of blood offering is a very interesting study that starts back at the beginning (yes in Genesis) and it still applies except that it's already been paid. The rest of God's rules still apply, Including the tithe. test the principle of tithing, you'll never out give God. Jesus adds to and clarifies some of God's laws but never cancels or does away with them.

The tithe was required ONLY on the produce of the land, the fruit of the trees, the flocks and the herds. The tithe was NOT required of Jesus for the furniture he made as capenter or that Paul made as tentmaker or that most of the apostles made as fishermen selling their catch.

The tithe WAS not for Jews living outside of Palestine....imagine bringing all that produce on a 3-week journey .... without refrigeration!

The tithe was also based on a 7-year cycle and was NOT collected during years 3, 6 & 7. The produce was to be gathered and left for the poor during years 3 and 6 while the 7th year the land was made to rest...a sabbatical (Lev. 25:4).....so if your church requires tithing every year, you are going against God's commands.

Most of the time the tithe was to be brought to Jerusalem 3 times per year (for the different growing seasons...for example, the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shuvat starts the new growing season for the fruit of the trees....so at the end of the growing season for those trees, the harvest was made and brought to the temple.

Here's the interesting note: Most times when the tithe was brought to Jerusalem it was for the people who brought the stuff to eat it during their own festivities!!! So you brought your tithes, had them blessed by God and then sat and ate the stuff:

Tithing Principles from Leviticus

22 “You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year. 23 And you shall eat before the LORD your God, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always. 24 But if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or if the place where the LORD your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, when the LORD your God has blessed you, 25 then you shall exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which the LORD your God chooses. 26 And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household."

Tithing is a misunderstood concept by Christians and nonChristians alike. Since all things come from God, all things are His and He sahres with us bountifully. Tithing is essentially the presenting the first-fruits of our labor back to God as a gift of respect and love. It is also our way of sharing in and supporting the financial and other needs of our church body. Some goes to supporting the leadership, some for the building and land maintenance costs, and some for helping the needy, some to support missions, etc. Tithing is not a requirement for salvation and feeling compelled to share a burden is not a bad thing. Its supposed to be a love thing!

The Lord commands the tithe in Malachi. This law was not done away with when Jesus fulfilled the law. A religion that does not require its adherants to be tithed is not going to do anything for anyone's soul.

Read the bible, the tithe was in effect even before the Law of Moses. Abraham gave a tenth to King Melchizedek. Also, Issac, and Jacob were tithers. God said about Abraham, that He had chosen him, because he knew he would teach his descendants after him to do was is right, including the tithe. Those who are the spiritual descendants of Abraham will do what is right and pay their tithes.

Don't know about the 10% for the Jewish preist. Even Adam, Eve, Cain & Abel were commanded to tithe. Which is what led to the death of Abel (jealousy over the best tithe offering).

My understanding is that the law of tithing predates the Law of Moses which contained so many things that were fulfilled at the death and resurrection of Christ. In fact, it appears that Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek.

Of course, this is one of many examples where it's nice to have living prophets on the earth. They can clarify these issues as necessary.
