You are correct, giving a dog a bath as often as every week will take away their natural oils and leave the skin dry causing nasty skin problems. At the most, a dog should be given a bath once a month. But then again, this varies a lot depending on the breed of dog.

Puppies shouldn't have a bath until they are 6 weeks old. If they are older than that then it should be ok unless the dog starts to scratch often which could indicate dry skin. If that happens then the baths should just be spaced out more, maybe every 2 weeks.

I work in a dog grooming salon as a groomer in-training. However I was a bather/brusher for three months. We have regulars that get baths every week, some just come in for grooms. In my experience and from working under the woman who is training me (she graduated from the Nash Academy of Animal Arts) I would say that it perfectly fine to bath your dog every week. I do my own cause I can't stand a stinky dog. Also, do some research on the particular breed you have, some may be better off with an every other weekly bath, due to the type of hair they have. With a puppy it's a great idea to get it use to the water and dryer now, it will make things a lot easier for your daughter when it's grown or a groomer and possibly would cut down on fees for a misbehaving doggie!

There is only one reason to give a dog a bath. And that is if the smell is offensive to the top dog, you. I have three dogs and they do not smell and two of them never get a bath. They play in the sprinkler if they want to. One has allegories and needs a bath with a medicated shampoo once a month.

Yes that's a little to often. I give my dogs a bath about once a month. If they get dirty in between you can use wipes they are at any pet store or place like walmart for inbetween use to refresh them. But yes that can over dry their skin and take away the natural oils too.

Why is your daughter giving the puppy a bath every week?
It's important to explain to your daughter that puppies aren't dolls and they very much need the oils in their fur.
Unless the puppy is downright dirty, there is no reason to give him any bath whatsoever. The natural skin oils have been put there for a valuable purpose, and shouldn't be removed by over bathing..
All the best

Giving a dog a bath every week is a very good idea. The more frequently you bathe them the less dirt, allergins, and other outside annoyances they will bring in your house. Depending on what breed of dog you have dpends on if bathing them weekly is bad for their coat. But as a general rule, a once a week bath is not going to do damage to their natural oils.

You're right - it is too much and it will dry his skin and coat too. Ideally I would not give my dogs more than 1 bath per month - but when they roll in stiinky things, I have no choice!

My daughter has got a new yorkie puppy and she wanted to wash him alot but it does take the natural oils in thier skin that makes thier coat shiny, their skin not flaky or itchy, and relieved. They should be cleaned about maybe twice every 4 wks. depending on the age of the puppy.
