Those outfits CANNOT help you until you have filed a proper return. PERIOD!

More importantly, keep in mind that there are 100 pennies in a dollar. If they settle a debt with the IRS for 99 cents on the dollar (probably pretty easy to do) they've delivered on their "promise" and you'll still owe them their outrageous fees.

You need to consult with a tax professional. A CPA or tax attorney, NOT a store-front tax prep mill. They can help you clean up the mess that you're in, AND work with you on an Offer in Compromise (what Ms Deutch and all are pitching) if that's warranted in your case.

If you personally had little or no income it's likely that they'll advise you to quickly file separate returns in your own name for the missing years, even if you had no income at all. This will establish intent on your part to clear your name with the IRS AND will also isolate you from prosecution or enforcement actions yourself. Then let the chips fall where they may for your husband.

Alternatively, there may not be any tax liability for your husband and he's just lost out on years worth of refunds that you would have otherwise received if you had filed timely returns. A local pro can help you assess your tax position and set up a plan of action to clear you with the IRS.

I will tell you that MOST of the companies on TV cannot help you in this case. Non-filing is a different problem than NON-PAYING.

I can assist you, and I do not charge a dime until I have thoroughly examined your case and you have had a consultation. I work nationwide and have many successful cases resolved or pending resolution from forum members here. I specialize in this type of work.

Most importantly, once I take on a case, you NEVER talk to the IRS directly again. All correspondence is done through our office.

If you click on my name or picture, you can send me a direct email and I will direct you to our website or to call us toll-free. I am also a member of the BBB and you will find no complaints. My success rate is over 98% over the past 18 years.

I really don't know whether that kind of company can help you or not, but they have been in business a number of years, so it figures that if they weren't legit on some level, they'd have shut their doors by now.

I sincerely doubt that all of your business with them could be done over the phone, because of the need to sign a contract with them and so forth.

But hey, give them a call and see if they can help you. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The IRS does work with people to get past debts cleared up, but I know the interest and penalties are terrible.
