I converted a barn into a living space. Now I want to heat it with a gas fireplace. How many btu/hour will I need?
The area is 2 floors 17 x 30 or 1200 sq.ft. ( aprox. 8400 cu. ft.) The walls are insulated with R13 and ceiling is R38 only two windows and one door. Its in the Boston area so it gets cold.

It can be done.

It is NOT true that they are all inefficient. what you need is a direct vent FURNACE RATED gas fireplace. They get up to about 86% efficiency. There are also optional duct kits that you can add to the fireplace to help distribute the heat either directly into another room or into your central system.

Look at a model that's about 30,000 BTU's on high. They are all adjustable, you don't have to run it on high all the time. furnace rated units will usually give you a square footage rating that's pretty accurate. look at the following brands:

Heat n glo (model 750TRS)
Fireplace Xtrordinaire (model 864)
Mendota
Kozy Heat (model 936)

And call your local NFI certified professional!!

Gas fireplaces are pretty inefficient, unless you are using a fireplace insert. How do you plan on distributing the heat throughout the structures rooms, and to the 2nd floor.
Are you going to use a separate blower?
