The sky is blue because of Rayleigh scattering. Light from the sun is scattered by water in the atmosphere, and blue light is scattered more than red. So the blue light goes all over the sky, and the red/yellow light from the Sun goes to your eyes.

Light refraction
White light when divided by prismatic action, divides into Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Due to light, moisture, etc... the atmosphere...on a good day...absorbs all the colors except the relected back blue that we can see.
And yes, I also believe this was designed, not just an accident. This same science of light and color gives us the Rainbow. The one God showed to Noah as a sign of never destroying the world by flood again.
