I also have a nice alternative to this recipe:

2 lbs lean ground beef
5 slices platter bacon
2 eggs
1 cup Italian Bread Crumbs
1 Tsp salt
1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
1 can diced tomatoes with onions and peppers
1 T Worcestershire sauce
2 Pkgs Liptons Herb and Garlic dry soup mix
3 T brown sugar
1 T mustard

Mix meat with spices, soup mix, bread crumbs and eggs. In skillet, saute bacon and chop. Add canned tomatos and simmer to reduce. When mixture has thickened, pour half of it into meat mixture and blend. Form into loaf and indent top slightly. With remaining tomatos, add mustard and brown sugar. Simmer until reduced and thickened. Pour over the top and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour (covered). Serve with sour cream mashed potatoes and fresh green beans

It sounds good but I think I saw this recipe or one very close in a 1956 Good Housekeeping cookbook.
