When Jehovah created our first parents, Adam and Eve, he made them perfect. And he created them so that they could live forever on this earth—if they obeyed his laws. (Genesis 1:26, 27; 2:17) Furthermore, God placed them in paradisaic surroundings. (Genesis 2:8, 9) When Adam and Eve left God, he no longer sustained them in perfection. Without his support, they deteriorated. The result was imperfection, old age, and ultimately death. Through the laws of heredity, our first parents passed those negative characteristics on to all their descendants, including us. (Romans 5:12)
But God didn't change his purpose. His Word states: “This is what Jehovah has said, the Creator of the heavens, He the true God, the Former of the earth and the Maker of it, He the One who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, who formed it even to be inhabited.” (Isaiah 45:18) So God formed the earth to be inhabited by humans, and that is still his purpose.
Since Jehovah is the all-powerful and all-wise Creator of the universe, no one can thwart his purpose. “Jehovah of armies has sworn, saying: ‘Surely just as I have figured, so it must occur; and just as I have counseled, that is what will come true.’” (Isaiah 14:24) Thus, when God says he will make this earth a paradise inhabited by perfect people, that is what will happen. Jesus said: “Happy are the mild-tempered ones, since they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5; compare Psalm 37:29.) We can count on the fulfillment of that promise. In fact, we can stake our lives on it.

That is correct. Everyone seems to have heard Jesus words at Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth" (New International Version), but still only think of heaven. God's Heavenly Kingdom will replace all human governments and rule over the entire earth. (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 16:14) Once that happens, God’s Kingdom will . . . Remove the wicked, whose selfishness harms us all. “As regards the wicked, they will be cut off from the very earth.”—Proverbs 2:22. End all wars. “[God] is making wars to cease to the extremity of the earth.”—Psalm 46:9. Bring prosperity and security to the earth. “Everyone will live in peace among their own vineyards and fig trees, and no one will make them afraid.”—Micah 4:4, Good News Translation. Make the earth into a paradise. “Thirsty deserts will be glad; barren lands will celebrate and blossom with flowers.”—Isaiah 35:1, Contemporary English Version. Eliminate disease. “No resident will say: ‘I am sick.’”—Isaiah 33:24. Bring the dead back to life. “All those in the memorial tombs will hear [Jesus’] voice and come out.”—John 5:28, 29.

yes this is to be taken literally. just sit back and think for a minute........this earth was not created for nothing go back to Genesis it was not Gods intent to have the earth just be ruined. His purpose for the earth was to have people to dwell in it and his purpose has not changed. God is not going to let humans ruin his creation. Ask yourself these questions If this verse is talking about heaven then what will happen to the earth? If he didn't want earth to be inhabited then why not just start off Adam and eve in heaven, Whats the need for earth? Adam and eve were to cultivate and take care of the earth and be fruit full and become many Gods purpose has not changed. righteousness is to dwell in the entire earth.

Of course. That theme is presented throughout the Bible, all the way to Revelation where it says the heavenly city Jerusalem will descend out of heaven onto the earth, and that God will, at that point, make his dwelling with man. So people will live on earth forever.

Actually that phrase "shall inherit the land"occurs something like 5 times in this psalm. It reminds one of Jesus' statement from the sermon on the mount "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5)
In my mind it is very plain Jesus is referring to the first resurrection from the dead.
In the millennial (1000 year) rule of Christ, all true believers will return with the Lord to rule and reign with Him as His co-regents in the earth, while all the greedy graspers await in Hades for the resurrection of the unrighteous and the Last Judgment.

HA!
Matthew 5:3-4 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Psalm 37:11. The meek shall possess the land.
So who exactly is going to inherit the earth or land?????
Oh, I don't really care, I am an Atheist!
But again, confusion in your book, righteous or meek!

The verse is a part of the song of David. It should not be translated literally.
It means a righteous man stays in the hands of God forever. He is under the care and good guidance of God to live eternally.

This prayer was written by David for his people; the Israelites. During his time, the people were fighting (much as they are today) to possess the land of Israel which was given to them by G-d.
He is referring to the people of G-d dwelling in the land their G-d gave them.
