I am sorry that you know people that have lost everything due to gambling. But gambling is no more of an addiction that drugs or alcohol. You have to be careful and have a little self control. People go to Las Vegas because it is a very exciting city not only for gambling but they have great shows and restaurants,in fact there is so much to do and see their you cant cover it all. You have to realize when you go into any casino the games are set up so that you will lose in the long run, the odds always favor the house. Casinos are growing in every state that is just the way it is,if you dont like it dont go. GOOD LUCK

People go to Las Vegas because it is a wonderful place to visit. They have some world class restaurants, spas, hotels, clubs, shows, shops and all manner of other entertainment. When I go I set aside a budget of a certain amount of money to spend per day. I go expecting to waste that money. But it is mine to waste and I'll have fun doing it. I never take more than I can comfortably afford to lose.

You ask what we can do to control casinos. I ask, what is it that you want exactly? There are only a handful of places in the US where casinos are allowed to operate. These places are few and far between. Most Americans live more than an hour away from their nearest casino, probably more for some. Where I live the nearest casino is nearly three hours away, and that one sucks. The nearest half decent casino to my house is nearly six hours away. And due to draconian anti-gambling laws in the US, that casino is on a boat!

The fact that you know some irresponsible people who squandered all their money in a casino doesn't mean that casinos are evil and should be shut down.

There are people who abuse prescription drugs. Should we ban doctors? Should be close down Walgreens and CVS for supplying these drug addicts?

How about alcohol, causes all kinds of sickness and death. Should we ban all shops that sell alcohol? Go back to prohibition?

What about cars? They kill over 43,000 Americans each year.

How about smoking? Smoking kills 400,000 Americans per year. Not to mention the billions of dollars squandered buying cigarettes and then paying for health care from smoking related illness. Billions more in lost productivity since smokers take off work more than non-smokers.

The list goes on and on. In society we have a choice. We have freedom or we have a nanny state. Your logic is that because you think casinos are harmful we should 'control' what you call a 'desease [sic].' Presumably this means you would like to see them shut down. In doing so you would put tens of thousands of Americans out of work.

If you take your anti-gambling logic to its conclusion, are you going to ban the lottery too? Shall we ignore the billions raised for education and other worthwhile help for society? Maybe we should just put up taxes to fill the gap?

No one forces you to gamble. No one forces you to visit a casino. If you are stupid enough to squander all your money in a casino, then you deserve everything you get and everything you lose. It is not an addiction, it's not like nicotine or heroine. You can stop any time you like. But some people are lazy, and are stupid enough to believe that they can beat the system. They would rather win money than earn money. They don't bother to learn the facts that the odds are against them.

Well why should I suffer because of them? Why should I have my rights violated and curtailed because some people are irresponsible? I shouldn't. I'm sick of people like you trying to ban everything that has the potential to be abused. The right way to handle this is education and informing people. Helping people to make sensible life choices. The answer is not to shut down all the casinos and put thousands of people out of a job.

As I got ready to post this response I did a little search online. It turns out I was way off in my estimate of gambling in the US. Currently there are over one million Americans who have a gambling related job in the US. In 2005 their wages topped $12.6Bn. You want to explain to a million Americans why they are all fired? Have you considered how this would affect other related industries or the economy?

Gaming can be addictive just like drugs.
Casino owners pimp out people who can not help themselves.
