I would not give up on locating college scholarships for your friend. 10th grade is an excellent grade to start searching for scholarships and looking at the different colleges. Actually, 15 has been the traditional age for 10th grade for many years until parents held back their child a year in preschool became a trend in some parts of the country. However, as you have discovered, it is still early for some scholarships. I will include some free resources to locate scholarships for college in the community and on the web.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too. This is for seniors primarily.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, if she is a high school senior, the guidance office has a list of local scholarships. This is for seniors primarily.

Fourth, good grades and SAT/ACT scores pay at most schools in the form of merit scholarships. Also, most states do reward students with an excellent GPA in the form of a scholarship.

Fifth, the FAFSA form needs to be completed after January 1 of her senior year. It will be for the upcoming fall semester or quarter. It will offer need based grants from the federal government based on her family's income and savings. In addition, it will qualify her for the federal work study program. It is free to fill out.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Good luck!
