Why all the animosity towards advancement?
Scientist's seem to be generally hated by the religious community... because as science discover's more and more truths, it leaves less and less for the religious to have faith in.
One fine example: The first to say the Earth was NOT flat were lynch mobbed by religious freaks who saw it as blasphemy to question what the good Lord had created... why?
And don't give me "That's not what really happened blah blah blah... HERE'S what actually happened"...

Dear completelysurroundedbyimb...

"Uh... being persecuted is not *necessarily* a guarantee that you're right. In fact, a persecution complex is often a sign that you've gone desperately wrong somewhere."

Ok, this part i am ignoring, because you seem to have lost track of the question completely and not understood it...

"And nobody has believed the Earth was flat since ancient times. Get your facts straight."
As for this gem, only after around 1250 did people start to accept the earth as being round... i wouldn't exactly call the Middle Ages "Ancient"...
Also, there's the modern day Flat Earth Society... link below
I LOVE IT WHEN I GET MY FACTS STRAIGHT AND RUB IT IN PEOPLE'S FACES!
Is it a sin to gloat? Cos if it is, tell the devil im on my way!

Ann 4 Kreist...
Why did you even bring the fictitious nonsense of a bible into this? I don't get it... my question has nothing to do with the bible. What is wrong with you?
Is using the bible just your answer to everything?

Or are you saying the earth ISNT spherical?

Sometimes, I think Christians oppose science so fervently because they fear that it will one day prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that there is no god, and never has been.

If those of faith were so solid in their beliefs, they would allow science to progress and advance. Their opposition to various scientific advances (stem cell, etc.) demonstrates to the world that their faith isn't unflappable.

Oh my goodness.
Don't tell me you actually believe that religious folks argued for a flat earth! That myth was debunked years ago! The last civilization to believe that the earth was flat disappeared centuries before the advent of Christianity.

And we can see your scientific bent - not only do you repeat that baloney about religious folks persecuting 'round earth' people, you even go so far as to make up imaginary lynchings! Do yourself a favor - sell that computer you're using, and go buy a history book. It might help you to gain some perspective.

Sorry to tell you "that's not what happened," but my God, man. You need a serious reality check.

Well, in the case of this Christian, you couldn't be more wrong if you tried. The more that science discovers about the intricate and magnificent balance of the world and the beings living on it, the more convinced I am that there is a loving Creator behind it all.

The more science finds out, the more it discovers that it doesn't know. It's a tool, not a be-all, end-all explanation of how everything works. And who's to say that God isn't the One Who's hidden mysteries and wonders for us to uncover?

There is plenty of room for co-existence between science and religious belief. It's people like you who perpetuate the delusion that the two things cannot work together.

Because any sort of advancement weakens the authourity, and therefore power of the church. Simple as that. It is much easier to lead people around by the nose if they don't know anything... Galileo and Copernicus spring to mind. Did you Copernicus was only pardoned by the Pope in 1996? Only about 4 centuries too late!

And completelysurroundedbyimbeciles, you jsut lived up to your own number. The "flat earth" theory was still being disputed as late as the 1700's... Ever heard of the "Flat Earth society"

No I have never had any animosity towards advancement.
Who are the right one that are being persecuted? Your question is not very well stated.

I would like a source sited on the lynch mobs that were religious freaks........in your example. Please.

Thank you

Christians do not fear the advancement of science, nor do we stand in the way of it, we use the Internet, radio, TV, planes, trains and any other means at our disposal to spread the good news of salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ. We do not stand in the way of scientific curiosity, it is when science is turned to evil ways such as abortion, weaponry, and such that we oppose "advancement" as should all decent human beings. Spirit filled christians know that science no matter how deep you look can only lead the seeker back to one inevitable conclusion; there is a God. It is the atheist who deny the truth and obvious conclusions that are found and persecute those who know the truth of God as is evident in your stance toward Christians. The only truth in science is that there must be a law giver for the laws of science to exsist. Science is not a end in itself , but a means of showing a dimension of God that is apparent to our senses.

Christians have been the ultimate conservatives going back to about the 4th century. They've been dragged kicking and screaming past every scientific, medical and social advancement. Yes, some Christians are progressive (enlightened), but they do not seem to be the majority.

Most people resist change. Science itself resists change, and that is a good thing. Einstein rejected the Big Bang theory for decades, despite it being necessary according to his theories, until the evidence was too strong to deny.

Of course, die-hard religionists are quite different from conservative scientists. Conservative scientist wait for strong data. Religionists close their eyes to the data.

Scientists are often persecuted because new findings will often contradict established dogma. This doesn't mean people who are persecuted are always right - Holocaust denial is banned in many countries, but the holocaust happened.
