I can't answer anything about Protestantism. I only know the basic information about them (and they're all different). But I can answer some for Catholicism. My whole family are Catholics but me.
Catholicism is the original Christian church. It was a branch from Judaism that took on a life of its own. Catholics believe in Jesus (yes they actually do). However, they also have several people that have been Sainted over time (such as Mother Teresa). They DO NOT worship the Saints or Mary, but they do pray to them in the hopes they kind of.... put in a good word for them with Jesus and the Christian god.
Sin and Salvation.... well Catholics believe that you can confess your sins to a Priest and can thus be foregiven by doing penance (usually in the form of prayer) as the Priest is viewed as a mouthpiece to the Christian god. Salvation can be had by doing good works as well as belief in Jesus.
The ultimate source of authority is the Vatican and the Pope who are the leaders of the church.
Too many rituals to name. All as ridiculous as the last. They believe you should go to church.
I'm not one to talk about the community life. I think its all crap and left it so long ago I don't really remember anything.
The Catholic church has undergone some very major upheavels in history. At one time, it even had TWO Popes that were... competing with one another.
You should really study up on it. No other religion, and followers, in history has had such a major impact on the world.
Protestants don't like any of it. They broke off from the Catholic church about 500 years ago. As you can see, they can't even get along with each other, much less other religions. They fracture into new Denominations, from each other, very easily while the Catholic church has, for all intents and purposes, always remained the Catholic church. Though the Catholics are losing members, they are actually more stable than the Protestants in that they don't fracture into a different denomination at the drop of a hat.
