I have been walking 1 mile each day for about 1 month. And on every walk my calves hurt and then after the top of my feet go numb. I have good walking shoes that support. Any ideas what it might be?

You should cut down the distance of walking first off to see if this helps. You could be over using your muscles and you need to go a bit slower on the distance. If You are overweight the weight is placing a great deal of stress on the joints in your feet.

After your walk take a hot bath using 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts, this will help cut down the pain and relax the muscles. apply an analgesic balm to your calves and feet after the bath.

If you don't feel better within a week you should check with your medical doctor.

It could be that your shoe laces might be to tight (for the feet going numb). Try doing some stretching for the calves before and after you walk and see if that makes a difference.

You would need to see your MD to sort this out. Many things could be the cause, from tendinitis to a fractured bone like a "march fx" the kind that can just crack to excessive walking and running. Most common would be a nerve compression causing pain and numbness, walking, running and standing will make this worse. Take care. SW FNP
