how much does a sheet of steel 1/4 inch thick,4ft wide by 8ft long

Here is an approximate value. The actual value will depend on the type of steel.

1/4" = 1/48'

4' x 8' x 1/48' = .667 ft³.

The density of steel is around 490 lbs per ft³

.667 ft³ x 490 lbs / ft³ = 327 lbs.

depending on what kind of steel.

you'll have to find a table with density listings.
look up the material you want.
find the volume of the piece, then multiply by it's density = weight.
V = 0.25" x 48" x 96" = cubic inches
make sure your units are the same as the density...you might have to do a conversion.

i.e. inches to feet.....or cm to m.....oz. to lbs......etc.
