Could it be caused by Sudden Oak Death? If so it is a mold or fungal infection that caused this. However, this would be true of all oak species and not just pin oaks. You don't mean they die of "old age" that way do you? Just a thought.

Not so sure about the pattern of dying from the center down, but most pin oaks in south central Illinois die from their inability to take up enough iron from high pH soils. Unfortunately, we plant them next to sidewalks, foundations, and roads that have high pH. I lost one in my front yard for that reason. They take a few years to die like that, and they get pretty unsightly in the process. It seems that it was a trend to plant pin oaks in urban settings about 40-50 years ago, and those trees are all suffering now.
