According to the Merck Manual, polyps can be hereditary. I would assume that anyone of any age could develop one.

By the same token, the Merck Manual also states that the incidence of colorectal cancer begins to rise at age 40 and peaks between the ages of 60 and 75.

They can possibly appear at almost any age, but the rate of occurance is so low that testing should start around 50, unless there is a family history, then 40. If there are any unusual digestive symptoms such as blood in the stool, then be checked now.
