i have digital cable with mediacom and when watch a show if i press info on the remote i see a record icon when i press it asks me if i want to record this program i thought you could only record a program with a dvr can someone help me

AJ is correct. Many set-top boxes have IR blasters that can send remote-control commands to your VCR or PVR to automatically start recording. You need to pre-configure it of course and it needs to support your VCR model.

Sometimes it asks that because you can hook up the VCR to it and it controls the VCR settings.
