I have a tough time with questions on this war. Never in our history except 1861-1865 has a war so divided our country. I am proud of every GI who served in Viet Nam and I also don't find fault with anyone who didn't go to war.
I lost many friends over there, 59,000+ of them. I talked against this war ever since I saw first hand what we were dealing with in 1961. Naturally it is always in our best interest to support the side that has our values. This wasn't the case here.
Again, as someone prior to me said, this was both a civil war and a war against communisum. Many things were done in this era to fight communisum. Too bad our soilders got caught up in it.

McCain was shot down after he bombed a power plant in Hanoi. McCain was an outspoken critic of the fact that LBJ did not commit as many troops as possible. This is what he blamed the problems in Iraq on,m and this is why he supported the surge which by the way HAS WORKED. For the first time since 2003 a majority of Americans believe that we are winning the War in Iraq and the War on Terror. Next time, before you criticize a national hero who, even in prison gave his captors hell, you should maybe learn a thing or two about the War in Vietnam. You are probably too stubborn or stupid to do so, but if you would really like to know about what John McCain did in Vietnam, read his book "Faith of our Fathers". Until you do, shut up.

Vietnam was a civil war that the US should have stayed out of. But the fact still remains; the US troops were not supported in that war, neither were they welcomed home after leaving there! The US treated our soldiers like they were foreign diseases as they got off of the planes in US! It was no t their fault that they fought there; it was not their fault that they had to kill over there. But, what they have suffered since the Vietnam war, is far more of a crime than the killing over there. A lot of them came home to wives and children that no longer wanted them, nightmares of the war that they couldn't stop, even with all the therapy in the world, and a lot of them is homeless, living on the streets of big cities, living from garbage cans. That is the real hell they suffered and still are suffering!

I will answer this answer on the two options given to me.
Against Communist:This is quite true when North Vietnam was a communist state, and the USA was hoping to help the South Vietnam which was a democratic country to prevent a total state of communist which was what happened now.
Civil war:it is in fact a civil war which two parties fight against each other in a country itself.
Final Judgment:Therefore, it is a civil war which one party want to be democratic and be no communist state while another pact want to make a communist state and overturn the democratic path of Vietnam.
Hope that my information will help.

civil wars always have outside influences. the us civil war, france,Iraq,Somalia,Viet nam. Civil war is the battle of outside influences made material in a certain place and time.
Your question is one that does not make sence.
It shows your ignorance to history. Ignorance of the dictionary...
A contest between nations with in states, carried on by force, whether for defence, for revenging insults and redressing wrongs, for the extension of commerce, for the acquisition of territory, for obtaining and establishing the superiority and dominion of one over the other, or for any other purpose; armed conflict of sovereign powers; declared and open hostilities existing with in a state.

Go get a history book. South Vietnam was a colony of France, when the North Vietnam decided to reunify Vietnam France sent troops to quell this attempt. France was unable to hold it's position againt the communist north they baged up and left leaving it for the UN to solve. The U.S. only got involved as much as they did when the UN called for peace keeping forces. Eventually the U.S. was the largest contributor of these forces. As history has shown us most problems that are blamed on the U.S. are actually started by other nations, but since the U.S. has the largest military force we are the largest contributors to try and quell these problems. Everyone seems to forget that Vietnam war was actually started by the French who gave up, just like the Panama Canal was started by the French who gave up, and the U.S. took over and finished it.
